Moon Roof Problems.

Am I the only one who Hates these things? I don't know of anyone who has one that doesn't have wind noise. I bought a new seal about a year ago, over a hundred dollars, and you could have dropped a dime right through in every corner. The factory knows they are going to leak, If anyone out there with one doesn't know, there is a drip rail all the way around under it and drain tubes running down the pillers.
Mine never has worked right, I think the motor was bad as it would only go a little way and stop and you would have to wait to get it to go any more. I changed the motor today and now it runs to good. Somtimes it works just fine and the next time it stops where it wants. Once it even went all the way up, back down, all the way back, then forward about half way and stopped there.
Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket manual one that will fill that big hole if I take it out. I've had a couple cars with those and no trouble, no noise, no leaks. The one on my 84 Cougar has been there for 15 years and still doesn't leak.
I like this car better than any other I've owned but it will be my last powered roof...
I have a wire feed welder and today I was thinking about tack welding the corners so it wouldn't move when you open and close the doors and then sealing it with black silicone. I believe that would cure it.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I'm going to assume you tried adjusting the moonroof - both fore and aft and vertically when closed. Mine has some wind noise but looking at the manual, it appears to be in adjustment, so I never bothered. With the inside shutter pulled shut, I can barely hear it at highway speeds.

Have you considered installing one of the sunroof louvers you see around? Looks like they should alleviate a lot of wind noise.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I have though about one of the louvers. My thing is I haven't used it in over a year and now with the new motor it still doesnt work right so I unhooked the power lead. I'm thinking just seal it. that wouldn't show or make any noise. I also thought about a piece of foam stuck up in there and close the shutter. Would probably stop the noise but I'm afraid it would hold moisture and cause problems.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I know there is a cam and microswitch on the motor drive which controls where it stops open or closed. Perhaps it is out of synch or needs cleaned. You may want to check the master control switch - the contacts on it may be sticking. I don't think a piece of foam in the cavity is a good idea myself.

If it's mainly wind noise that's the concern, I would try the louver/deflector idea. I don't think they look bad at all. I believe they come smoke colored, but for a pittance you can get them color match painted before you install it.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

As far as wind noise is concerned I have a low profile air dam on my roof that cuts out the noise completely, it also cuts out any wind into the cabin. I think it's well worth it.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I got a new seal from www.sunroofdoctor.com or something like that. I have no noticable wind noise from it. It is a little off alignment front to back, it's squished up front but the back part still contacts. I also have the break in the strip on the drivers side and not in the back if that makes a difference I don't know.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

Hey Leo, can you get more specific, what air dam did you buy that eliminates wind noise?????

I get alot of wind noise on my 94 that I would love to get rid of. However my moonroof works fine, no leaks or anything, and so I am loath to mess with it.

Did you have wind noise before, when your moonroof was closed, and the air dam got rid of it??? Does the air dam make its own noise???

Thanks

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I've noticed a problem lately. When I drive on the freeway and hit about 50mph, the moonroof "opens up" so to speak. It scares the crap out of me, and the only way to fix it is when I'm outside the car. I basically push down on the front part of the moonroof and that'll stop the wind noise until I pass 50mph again. I'm thinking about getting a deflector, but I don't know where to buy one nor how to mount it.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Oh, and it doesn't leak water.

RE: Moon Roof Problems.

I also have sunroof problems, but mine isn't the factory sunroof either. It appears mine was a dealer installed option. Mine does suck open though, but not until i hit triple digits. It will however shift a little bit if I hit a bump going down the freeway and msut crack open just enough to allow windnoise.
