I have a 1996 Mark VIII with 56,000 miles. Uo until yesterday, everything was running great. Today, it doesn't start, the fuel guage pointer is about an inch to the left of the full mark. The radio doesn't work, the center information pod that shows time, fuel mileage, etc. doesn't work and the headlamps and tail lights turned on by themselves. If this is a ground problem, where exactly would I look?

Welcome! :)

I had similar problems with my '93 a few weeks back. I checked and cleaned all the engine grounds and all seems well(knock on wood).

Remove the plastic cover that has the headlamp access doors. There are 3 ground points there on the header panel, one on the passenger side and 2 on the drivers side.

I would disconnect the battery and clean the connections there to start. Did you drive through any water lately or did it rain recently in your area?

Ok........he PM'd me saying it cranks over just fine but won't start.

First thing to check, is the common crank sensor connection. Reach down in the front of the engine by the crank pulley. There is a sensor on the side of the engine right underneath the A/C compressor. Unplug this, and plug it in a couple times, this will clean the connection and it may start.

Next, we need to figure out if you're getting fuel or spark, or I should say, find out what you're NOT getting.

Turn the key to the "ON" position while listening under the car, do you hear the fuel pump "buzz"? If so...lets move on to the next step.

Let us know....

I finally tracked the problem to an anti-theft module. Once disconnected, the car immediately started and everything else worked. I put the unti back on and the car wouldn't start. If you hit it, the car would start. Just got lucky.

Haha....awesome job dude. Talk to Jamie and he'll send you another module.

Where is the anti-theft module located/ Can you post a picture or two? Thanks.

It is next to the air ride switch on a gen 1... I wouldn't be too sure your key less entry would remain operational if you installed a different module.

The location is directly under the glove box. Unscrew the panel under it and remove same. You'll see a tan colored box that actually says ant-theft module on it. It is held in by two screws. Very easy to replace. If you need a photo let me know.
