RE: Moving
Oh, I just GOTTA chime in on this one, since I'm getting ready to move as well. My position was "eliminated" a little over 7 months ago. Since then, I have had a few opportunities come up that were located in Indiana (Ft. Wayne... bleh). All of them asked the same question... "why would you want to leave warm, sunny Florida to live in Indiana?" Had half a notion to say "for a paycheck", but thought better of it. Played it down by saying I grew up in Ohio, but even that didn't work.
The job market has REALLY been the pits this past year, at least in the engineering field. Nothing like being TOO specialized. Have only turned down one offer since last June (Hyundai in Montgomery, AL). Has been NO activity in the southeast. Companies up north won't touch me because they can't imagine why I'd leave florida to live up north. Companies out west have a large enough talent pool locally that typically they don't have to fork out $20-30k to relocate someone.
Currently have one offer on the table, and one on the way... and not a moment too soon since my unemployment ran out last month! Have a decent offer in Maine, and am expecting a second offer tomorrow from southern California. Personally, I'm hoping for the latter, but will wait & see how the relocation policy looks. Would be nice to take my Mark back home... (bought it in Anaheim).
Man, I really feel for y'all in the northeast. Cost of living up there is OUTRAGEOUS! Real estate & rentals in Maine were as bad or worse than L.A.!... and that's typically with NO GARAGE! Guess all the rich folk from Boston & NYC must have their vacation homes up there, & drive up the local real estate market.
Good luck with YOUR move tho. I'm not looking forward to relocating at this time of year, especially if I go to Maine. Don't know if I can handle having the Mark stored 4+ months of the year, but would NEVER drive it in winter. I don't even drive it if the forcast calls for rain! Will definitely be an adjustment regardless...
