MPG and EPA

Id likes to start something new and discuss gas mileage and EPA. I know that sounds ODD especially for me I love to race and to make power you have to burn fuel. I LOVE the fact that a jet dragster burn 38 gallons of fuel in one 1/4 mile run can you say BADD A$$, and I plan on doing power mods to my 94 Mark8. With fuel costs going up iv seen on TV clubs for hybrid and economy cars that all they talk about if how they got better mileage and cars like the ones we love should be sent to the wrecker and I say that’s a lode of BS. Just this weekend I got my car inspected. Since it not OBDII my car is subject to a much harder test and higher standards and my 160,000mile car passed with out a problem. Next this weekend I took a rode trip from Dallas to west Texas on I20 at 70 mph my meter was reading an average of 30mpg and over the whole trip of going threw small towns, stop lights short trips to the store etc I got 25.6 MPG and I noticed the faster I went the better the economy fuel got NOT BAD for a 14 year old 290 hp 2tune car. I’m hopping to do mods that give more power, make the car more efficient and show the tree huggers that we don’t have to take the old cars off the rode to make the EPA happy.
((((((WHATS YOUR MPG?))))))))

Ummm... mods that make more power and make the car more fuel efficient... the ONLY mod that will do that is upgraded exhaust... that is it...

I have to call you on that one Max.

But besides that, my modified '93 gets 19 mpg. That may sound sad until I remind you that is driving across the mountains to the track, running at the track all day and driving back across the mountains - with 4.30 gears. On a highway cruise with the wife I can get 23-24 mpg.

I can't think of any reason to complain. ;)

I ride a bone stock 1997 and get 15mpg (18 on the highway). :( Damn you guys and your good mileage mark VIIIs!

Well people seem to have a very tough time grasping the concept of different driving conditions and gasolines etc as well as maintenance. One guy drives downhill at 60mph and reports 35mpg and all the sudden everyone thinks their mark does crappy.

Everyone one of you who can get 93 premium is going to get better gas mileage than us 91 Californians.

Also pure freeway my 1998 Mark VIII went from 27mpg at 70mph to 23mpg at 70 with 3.73 gears.

I would average 15mpg in the Mark VIII post mods and 17-18mpg b4.

23 is about right for my 95 with 3.73's, tune and an exhaust. Before the gears I could tickle 30 mpg. I typically average 18-21 with a mix of driving.

My blown 97 with 3.73's averaged 23 on a long road trip. I would typically average 12-17 depending on how much I was pressing the right foot down. 16-19 driving like a normal person.

Same with me.

Highway driving is about 23, but the car seems to like 80 on highway 5 to Oregon and back. I think it could get better if it could slow down to 70, but it just wont do it!

3.73s coming soon, I'll see what happens then!

Why do those have to be mutually exclusive? With my 3000 stall converter, I get better gas mileage in the city (sitting at red lights, my engine idles easier) and get more rwhp off the line.

Remember, out of all of the energy that comes from burning gasoline, only about 3% actually propels the car - the rest is heat. I would think someone could improve on that...

I think that # is actually closer to 20% but this is due to the inherent design of the internal combustion engine...

A jet engine is almost 70% efficient at the optimum operating point...

Point being I don't think you'll do any better with some mystery mod that will magically add MPG... we haven't had any of these in the past 100 years of the Combustion engines existance.

Well I haven’t started doing any mods on the mark yet. Iv been focused on getting the car back in to good condition sense the privies owner didn’t take good care of it; motor, suspension and cosmetic. I Bought my 94 Mark 8 in August for $2000 and have changed plugs, wires, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, fuel filter, 1 rear air bag and the two O2 sensors EGR pressure sensor, TP sensor, un-clogged the EGR, new heater core, radiator, oil pressure sensor, front sway bar connectors, AC controls and odds and end cosmetic peaces inside and out, spent about $900 (just so you know the condition it was in) I still need to get the trans worked on, it doesn’t know when to shift from first to second, still need to replace the two front strut/bags and the exhaust system looks like its been spliced in to a few times. I want to start my mods with what I did on my 89 5.0; fuel pressure regulator and bump up the pressure for better fuel atomization, hotter distribution coils, poleis and of cores synthetic oil plus correcting the bad exhaust system. On the 5.0 I got Hp increase and better mileage but it was a stick shift.

An engineer tolled me that a jet was the most INEFISENT engine per mile traveled (MPG) but there isn’t an engine that can make the power, carry the lode and go the speed. Id likes to see the specs on the motorcycle Jay Leno bought powered by a small turbine jet engine. What is the MPG?

Wow that is an insane amount of work you did on that mark...

I don't mined doing the work. Iv had new cars and now I cant stand the thought of buying new. Id rather gets an older car like the Mark and customize it. You don’t see many marks on the road especially customized and modified. I was in the car customization and pro audio business for 8 years. None of the work is hard just takes time, thought and $$$.
