RE: My antelope mount pics

You ARE a freak... but then again, it isn't like any of us didn't already know that...

RE: My antelope mount pics

What did it score and where did you get it? Tell me about that mule deer as well. I take it you're a bowhunter with all the arrowhead displays? Surely you didn't get the pronghorn with a bow, did you?

RE: My antelope mount pics

I hit that bastard in the back of the head with an arrow. I have pics of him running around with the arrow in his head. I will find them and send them to you if you like. I took him up by Muddy Gap, Wy near an old uranium mine. He has not been officially scored, but the taxidermist who scores a lot of mounts scored him at 84 2/8 If I remember right. The WR is 95 I think.

The mule deer in that picture was taken near Jal, NM (S.E NM) in the sand hills. It only has a 25" spread. Between my father and i we had to settle for 3 mule deer with 24-27" racks (225-255lbs field dressed) in the last two years out of WY. We are dissapointed that we do not have a 30-35" mount yet. Maybe this year.

So, I'm not sure which I find more disturbing... the fact that you hit em' in the back of the head with an arrow and then took pics while he ran around with an arrow sticking out of his head... (where's Steve)

Or... the fact that you were hunting near an old uranium mine...

Antelope are the 2nd fastest land animal in the world. They are extremely difficult to get close to. I've never hunted them, but bowhunters normally hunt them around watering holes. He may have stuck it in the back of the head, but I'm sure he wasn't aiming for it. Must have been a pretty long shot, maybe 50 yds or so? What kind of bow do you use? And I'd love to see the picture with the arrow.

Yepp pronghorn antelope are only slower than a cheetah.
99.9% of the antelope that you will ever see are EXTREMELY difficult to get within 150 yards of. If you approach them standing up you will never get close to a wild antelope. The large males are very mean, and if you are VERY VERY patient you can get close to them. But IF you stand up and present yourself as a larger being, they will run like wildfire.

Luckily I found this particular animal close to two other females that he was having fun with. I crawled on my stomach for about 250 yards and got within 35 yards of the animal. He was very angry that i was there, and continued to snort and paw at the ground for a good 10 minutes after I stopped crawling. Several times he acted like he was going to charge at me, but the females convinced him to back off.

The two feamles were very nervous and kept running around, which pissed me off. But I kept patient, and made small movements to still let him that I was there and not leaving. Hoping that he would think I was a small preditor like a coyotte or fox.
I waited and waited for him to get closer, or charge at me. I needed a little more time to get a good shot without him running too far off.

My patience paid off. I laid there long enough and barely kept moving until he was very angry at me and FINALLY started to come towards me. Once he was was around 20 yards away I quickly raised up aimed high on his neck and shot. Of course when I had raised up he started to retreat. I ended up hitting him in the BACK of the head instead of on the side of his neck.

I chased him for about 4 hours waiting for him to die. Luckily it was both bow and riffle season so I ended up having to shoot him with my 338 MAG from about 300 yards off after he broke the arrow off in his head and I was tired of chasing him. I never got within 150 yards of him again.

Evidentally those pics are on my laptop at work, and not my PC. I will get them FTP'd back on my webspace again. The pics with the arrows are VERY unusual. I have never heard of anyone hitting an antelope with a bow. VERY VERY uncommon.
Many of you will remember seeing them way bac when on the old site.

I will post the arrow one on here tomorrow.

Wow, now that's a good hunting story. We have antelope here in Oklahoma, but they're way out west and you have to apply for a lottery. Basically the chances are about 1 in 70 of getting picked. And good job on the chase, most would have lost him after 4 hours.

RE: My antelope mount pics

I spent some time in Wyoming where the deer and the antelope play. :)

It was a 45 minute drive from town(Douglas) to work through nowhere. The pickup I had at the time had more lights than a small airport. }( I took an outside pair on the top light bar and pivoted them out about 20 degrees. Why? To improve survival chances at high speed nighttime encounters. The extra side lighting gave me lead time to get on the brakes. Night-time driving there was literally hazardous to your health.

During the day, you couldn't get near the antelope herds but would always see them off in the distance. The wildlife there was incredible. Bald eagles with 6 foot wingspans! You didn't appreciate their size until they landed atop a fencepost and made it look like a toothpick! Badgers so mean they would square off against a pickup truck in the middle of the road. You would see see deer, elk, antelope, bison, eagles, etc... every single day.

Until winter.

My antelope mount pics

Well I finally got my antelope mount back. It has been almost a year, but it was worth the wait. THe taxidermist did a fantastic job!!!!!

It is not the tallest set of horns by any means (15.5") but the mass is incredible. This is the main contributer of the high boone and crocket score. The neck on this animal was very large as well. It was a very nice specimen!!

RE: My antelope mount pics

I have never heard of anyone taking an antelope in North america with a Bow and arrow. Technically I did not either, I mearly wounded it, and got tired of chasing it. But it was a spectacular experience for me. I am glad I got pics of it.
