My intake "Ice Box"

I make stuff
So, like 4 or 5 years ago, I got ahold of some spare sheet metal at work and came up with this really quick. It's really crude, but it got the job done, and it was free!

*Now, I know a lot of you don't like the open element filters.....I don't really care. I like the way they look and I like the way they sound too.*

Anyway, I made that with the intention that it would be sort of a template for a future, more refined version. I had also planned on cutting that rubber stuff to the contour of the hood. Well, almost 5 years later, I still had it on the car. The other day, I decided that I would try again. I must say that this one is a much better attempt at it, but is still in no way a finished product. This time, I made it from 2 pieces of aluminum and then welded them together at a 90 degrees. It took a whole bunch of trimming and fitting and trimming and fitting, and finally go this...

Instead of just sitting in there where it could move all around, I welded tabs to it to use the existing stock airbox mounts.

And....here's how it looks with the MAF and air filter installed. I still need to figure out how to line it up to the contour of the hood and seal it off from the rest of the engine bay. While effective, I don't think my first attempt with the big, stupid, ugly orange rubber turned out very good looks-wise. Once I figure out the best way to do that, I'm going to make another one out of some thicker aluminum and then probably get it powdercoated or something.

I think I'm going to make a cover for it out of plexiglas or acrylic. Got lots of it at work. I need to make version 3.0 first though. I found some thin stainless steel at work that I'm probably going to use....or maybe just some thicker aluminum.

I've been meaning to make a cover for mine as well, even though the CAI is in the fender, it would be more for looks than anything else.

I had one of the original IceBoxes and modified it to work with the CAI setup I have.
