My Mark died at a gas station - any ideas?

I stopped to get gas last night on the way home from New York City. I was very tired and just wanted to get home. After I get the gas out in my car I try to start it and it runs extremely rough for about 3 or 4 secons, then it stalls. I try again and again to start it, the same thing. Eventually, it only runs for about 1 second and then dies.

It doesn't respond to me giving it gas at all, it just dies. I had to have it towed to my house for $140.

I am thinking maybe it is the fuel pump? The fuel filter? Perhaps the transmission is stuck in a higher gear?

What worries me is that I have been putting regular gas (87) in the car for months now, because I can't afford super. Could this have anything to do with it? Did I screw up my engine?

Please help!

94 Mark VIII 201k miles.

Thanks. I am thinking maybe it's the fuel pump, does it sound like the culprit?

Can you hear the pump? I would replace fuel filter first then check for FP.

RE: My Mark died at a gas station - any ideas?

I wouldn't know what sound to listen for. I don't think I have ever heard the pump.

I did turn on the ignition and checked the pressure at the fuel schraeder valve and it was zero. Just to make sure, I had my girlfriend try to start the car, and as it was cranking, I checked the pressure again - zero.

Since the car is a 94 with 201k miles and the original fuel pump, I am thinking that this is likely the problem.

Just in case, did you check your fuel pump inertia switch in the trunk?

The fuel pump should run 1-3 seconds when the ignition is turned on. So with a gauge hooked up, you should be able to cycle the key on and off and see fuel pressure.

You may want to check the fuel pump relay.

I never checked the intertia switch in the trunk. Does it sometimes shut itself off? Where exactly is it located?

Where is the fuel pump relay?

RE: My Mark died at a gas station - any ideas?

The inertia switch is on the left side of the trunk behind the air suspension shut off access door, below the air suspension shut off switch. It's a red button try pushing it down. If it clicks, it's reset. I hope that's it, but it sounds too easy.

The relay is under the hood in the fuse box I believe.

If it's the box with the red button next to the air ride switch, then I already tried to push it down and it wouldn't move or click. I guess that means it never shut off?

As for getting the new fuel pump, I need to order it first thing tomorrow. Which site has the right one?

JDSPerformance.com offers the gss242 190lph Walnro pump for the 85-97 Mustang here:
http://www.jdsperformance.com/index.asp?initemuid=436&fcmd=item&inmake=all

Yet, Autoperformanceengineering.com has a walbro 190 lph specifically for the 93-96 Mar VIII here:
http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/html/fpapps.html

They also offer seperate ones for the 85-97 Mustangs and the Mustang Cobras. What is the difference?

I got my 255l Walboro from www.50resto.com
It was like 109.00 if my memory serves me correctly.

I replaced my first pump at 150,000 miles
at 300,000 miles I replaced the second one, I didn't want to wait for it to quit.

Thanks. I can't believe you have that many miles. What is your secret? Did you have any tranny work done?

I put mercron V in it when I bought it @ 68,000 miles

with that many miles on it, I assumed it was going to "blow up soon".
So I didn't spend any money on it.

I didn't add a tranny cooler
I didn't perform the 1-2 upgrade

I kinda thought I'd take care of all that when I invariably replaced the transmission.

Then, I proceeded to bracket race the car for 4 long seasons.
I changed the fluid every 25,000-30,000...

Other than that, I can only guess that my lack of "manual shifting" the car, and a really "good tune" on the chip for my luck with this transmission.

When I had my chip done I requested at "all the flare" be removed from the shifts.

I kinda think that bought me alot of time because during "flare" alot of tranny wear occurs.

Blah blah..
Please take that with a grain of salt, because it's not really backed up by actual scientific data, it's just a personal experience.
