My Mark was Totaled

I made a hail damage claim on my Mark, and they totaled the car, it had five major impact points and the rest were tiny suckers. They said the car had $4000 worth of damage and they did not want to run the risk of getting the vehicle in for repair and it end up costing more. They gave me almost $6000 for the car because they say that it was in great condition althouth the car was valued at $5267.00. I had to buy my car back from the Insurance Co. for a little over a $1000. I think I'm still going to get the car fixed, unless I can find a hell of a deal on a 97 or 98 model. I just can't believe that our cars our so wotrthless that they would actually total a perfectly good car like that. The only good thing is that hail damage is exempt from a salvage title, Thankfully Just thought that I would share this with the group. The good news is the car is paid for.

RE: My Mark was Totaled

That sucks! We had some close calls here in South St. Louis County twice this week already, and it looks like another round is on the way. I think I've almost had about 400 heart-attacks (no garage for either car :( ). Last night, not too far from here, there was 2" hail falling.

You can have it fixed. A friend of mine has a Focus (lease vehicle) that got caught in a wicked hail storm. Every body panel was dented heavily, the windows and headlights were smashed out, the outside rear view mirrors were ripped off. It looked like someone took a baseball bat to the whole thing. His insurance fixed it all up, it's good as new now.

Might be a good idea to part out the car. You can get a few thousand more that way, giving you enough to get that 2nd gen

I agree with Joey. There seems to be a good market for used Mark VIII parts on eBay. You might even be able to sell the motor and tranny locally in the newspaper. You could easily make that $1000.00 back and use the insurance money plus the parts money to find something you really want. The prices on our Marks are getting lower day by day.

I was within two blocks of getting pelted with bean sized hail early in the week. I was freaking out. If I would have had time - I would have been out there duct taping cardboard to the car.

There was no way to get it under cover where I was.

Luckily no hail - just water and wind.

RE: My Mark was Totaled

I've talked to a couple guys about the paintless dent repair. Each said that they would come to the house to do it and could get the dents out of the roof for me. I told each of them that If I am not satisfied with the quality of the work I would not pay anything. Two refused to even come out. The third guy was real cool and insisted that I would be satisfied and that he would be out on Friday (tommorow) to do the work. I insisted on having the work done at my residence and not at a shop so no one could hold her hostage when I refused to pay for crappy work. This guy seems confident about his abilities and is sure he will be able to satisfy my needs, so we will see.

As for parting out the car, I am really not wanting to get rid of it. I've spent a lot of time keeping her maintained and she runs great, she just dosen't look as good as she once did, not to mention I just put those HID's in their. I want to enjoy my investment for a little while longer. As of today parting out my car is not an option. I will buy a Gen 2 once I find one that fits my budget and one that does not have excessive miles on it. My wife actully loves the car too, which is a first. She usually does not like any of my cars and considers herself now to good to drive the old beat up T-bird any longer. The Gen 2 I would like it to be an addition to the family and not a replacement. So if you guys see some good deals on some Gen 2's let me know.

Hail sucks. Earlier this week there was hail somewhere around here. I didn't see any, but I made sure my lincoln was securely in the garage anyway.

I've been there guy. Most of the time, the guys doing hail damage insurance work, travel from disaster to disaster, helping local companies settle insurance claims. He could care less how much YOU think the car is worth. He uses his little book, unless you can show him written proof.

Before I broke my rotary habit cold turkey, I had a 1981 RX-7 that was perfect inside in out. I hand built the motor. A lady whacked the fender doing $1500 damage. The insurance dude appraised the car for $2400. I had THAT much in the motor. But since I couldn't PROVE it, he told me to take it or leave it. I learned my lesson. I now get my "special" cars apprised. Or I get special riders on it from the insurance company (special paint, etc)

If you drive an older "special" car have it appraised and get the appraisal in writing. If it is in a fender bender (or hail), you can lay the appraisal on the insurance dude and tell him to total the car for what it is worth. If the appraisal is from a legitimate appraisal house, he can't total the car for LESS that that written appraisal. Usually, they end up fixing the car. If you have pre-registered the appraisal with your insurance company that ensures you will be treated fairly. Be advised that having that appraisal in your file MAY increase your insurance premiums.

RE: My Mark was Totaled

I had a ton of damage done to my ford Escape in April of 2001. I only had the car for a month and only made one payment. I was out in St. Louis visiting my wifes family when a huge hail storm hit. They had to cut off my roof and weld a new on in. replaced the hood, all 4 doors and repair the rear end. Cost the insurance company just over $8,000 to have the work done. Makes me glad I moved back to NY. The body shop here in NY said they have never seen such damage from a storm. We had to sit in the basement for almost 1 hr because of 3 torandos in the area. Luckly no windows on the broke. What stinks is we were leaveing 2 days later for home.
