Looking for a car to replace the GF's 2000 accord with 140k miles, the Accord is having tranny issues and I am going to try and get rid of it cheap. So I am looking for a replacement car for her.

So far I have

96-98 Acura Integra (a little too small)
97-00 Civic
99-00 Jetta (don't know if they are reliable)

I am trying to get a car that will be reliable and cheap to maintain as well as get really good gas mileage. She doesn't like big cars so Crown Vic is out of the question x( . Any advice or pointers for some reliable A-B transportation?

As luck would have it. I got a wonderful call today. Sounds like the accord tranny finally took a dump. D4 light flashing, check engine light turned on. And everytime she stops "it feels like someone is dropping a brick" . So there is no way I am going to sell it in this shape, I am going to have to fix it... It is like CARS know when you're about to sell them, the tranny was acting the same way for over 1 year and now it decided to crap out... Kinda creepy actually.

Probably best to put in a used one from a salvage yard prior to selling.

Have you looked at Mercury Sable?

The 2000 we had prior to the TownCar seemed reliable and economical enough. The DOHC V6 had decent power for a car its size while giving good fuel mileage. I didn't necessarily like the FWD but overall the wife liked it. At least it was domestic. ;)

Actually I like the sable/taurus. Helped my friend pick out a few that he wanted for the family. But the Vulcan engine (which is found in 9/10) is such a big piece of crap. Gets 19 city and 27 highway, yet it only has 150hp or so. It is reliable though. Gas mileage is a big factor in this decision. The DOHC V6 is nice but I think it would be better to stick with a 4. Btw Accord trannys are EXPENSIVE... they run for 1200-1500 used from the scrapper or, I can possibly get a rebuild under 3k. I think I would rather get someone to do the work and get a warranty for this money.
