ok so the entire engine bay is stripped/gutted except the engine and entire steering. I was thinking on getting an egine hoist but the trans is still attached. the intake is off the egine so would it be eaiser to just drop the kmember and take the engine out the bottom. I don't have a lift and the car is on dirt but I figure maybe i could jack the car up high enough. and if not the bottom whats the eaisest way to take it out from the top? i've pretty much gutted this entire car by myself, 1st time doing this, its been a pretty cool and fun learning process but i don't think I'll be able to remove the egine by myself. any help would be appericated. thanks in advance

RE: need help fast on removing engine

You're going to need some very tall jack stands. Get the car up as high as possible, undo the k-member, and lower the engine.

RE: need help fast on removing engine

what if I used like cinder blocks and put the jack stands on those? I figure its got to be up in the air at least 4 feet. do that to the front and back? whats involved in taking out the kmember anyways? just un-do the bolts that hold it on and the tranny and thats it? which do you guys think is easier? or the best way to go?

RE: need help fast on removing engine

I wouldn't put jack stands on top of cinder blocks. if one of the blocks cracks the car will come tumbling down on top of you. get the car onto pavement somehow, and use tall jack stands.

RE: need help fast on removing engine

When all else fails do it backwards. Get the k member ready to drop. Set the car down on a moving dolly under the engine and unbolt it. Use the engine hoist to lift the car up high enough to roll the engine out.

DO NOT USE CINDER BLOCKS!!!

Speaking from experience, I'm one lucky SOB. Years ago, I replaced the transmission on a '67 Pontiac Lemans, and used cinder blocks and 2 x 4's to jack the car up. After all was done, I jacked the car up to remove the blocks, and Voila, one of the cinder blocks proceeded to fall to pieces! Squished M8SHOSCGUY is not a nice visual.

"DO NOT USE CINDER BLOCKS!!!"

When I was a kid, myself and two buddies were working on and under a '48 Chevy. John was working on tailpipe and was laying directly behind right rear tire. Car had been driven on planks onto 4 cinder blocks.(Planks were then removed) Don was working in engine compartment and for some reason car was out of gear and no emergency brake. You guessed it....Don leaned on front of car, car rolled rearward, off cinder blocks and rolled completely over John's chest!! Believe it or not, the only thing he suffered was Wards Riversides tire tread imprint beautifully imprinted across his chest! He wouldn't remove his shirt in front of any of his family until the imprint dissapeared. Funny, yes, but what if.....

what if, indeed.

good thing that our chest cavities take more than the weight of a car to crush. If it lands on your stomach, though, there's a good chance at internal injuries, or even suffocation if someone isn't there with a jack to get it off you in time.
