Need help replacing rear window

Last night my gf was using the Mark for work, and while returning to the car watched dumbfounded as a 15ft limb broke high off a tree and shattered the rear glass. It didn't bust out, just shattered inside the protective film. We were under a high wind advisory with sustained winds of 25-30mph and gusts of up to 55mph.

I kind of see it as a blessing in disguise, b/c my seal was beginning to curl up and half of the defrost strips had failed. I'm just not looking forward to the money it will take:frown:

My question is, what are you experiences with replacing this window? I've heard that the seal is way expensive, but i would guess the glass to be a pretty penny as well. Are these parts as hard to find as others? Anyone else had this happen??
 
Ouch! Sorry, but hope it works out for the best.

As far as I know, the seal isn't sold separately. I did have my whole rear window replaced under warranty due to the defroster not working properly, but it was years ago and I don't remember much about it.

Good luck with it. Will your insurance cover it, cause I assume that'd be the way to go.
 
You have to buy the window/seal as one piece. Talk to your insurance....then talk to Jamie and see which route you want to go. It will be pricey.
 
Yeah, I only carry liability since it's 14 years old now. I called the dealer, and he said he could have one shipped out in 5 days from the outfit that manufactures them for Ford for $812. That comes with the seal attached, the seal is not available separately. So now I think I'll shop around to a few local shops and see if it's worth the price to try a reproduction unit.

If I do go with the dealer glass, I'll have to figure in install prices over the $812 in material. And then the cost to repair the decklid. Ugh.
 
you wont find much of a difference in price, no one aftermarket makes the rear glass. ford gets it from NAGS and glass shops get it from safelite i believe, there is no aftermarket rear window for the mark VIII. i have a few mint used ones i cut out if you want to drive to florida and pick one up!!
