Need to lose a second

Dang...thought I would be the first to do this. Would be getting started next month, but our TV show ran into some issue, so we'll likely have to wait until next season before we see some cash.

oh well...I should still have the first street legal 200+ mph Mark VIII with a turbo and stock gears.

And no, I would never even think about attempting to prove it. I've had to emergency brake at 130mph one time. That was...interesting.

I thought that the rules were stricter! I thought that the only way to CARB certify was to have a complete kit. How do they know how you are putting the hardware in your car? You could do something totally different than the next guy and yours can be clean as a whistle and his can belch out all kinds of pollutants!.

As far as the shortblock is concerned are you going to beef it up? I was thinking that it may be cheaper to buy a built engine than to do it myself. The problem that I have is I can't seem to let myself trust anybody to do the work for me! I have to change my attitude because I just don't have the time that I used to!

One reason why I am going to obtain a signed statement from the company saying that I will be 100% CA legal with their product. If I don't pass smog because of certification, I take them to court.

Good luck with that.

I'm sure the only way they could go along with such carte blanche would be if THEY installed/tuned it. Many manufacturers(if not most) limit their liability to the replacement cost of the product if not installed by them or an approved installer. Of course, limitations vary by state and I'm sure CA law has adequately addessed such issues.

Well I have to give the turbo idea some more thought. If it was a dedicated MK8 system that was CARB certified I would be more enthusiastic about the idea.

As I said my 1982 Mustang is exempt from emissions testing; however after spending a lot of money on an engine/drivetrain I found out that even though it was exempt from emissions testing there was no way I would be able to register that vehicle with the mods that I did! It does go real fast though and as I said before the vehicle really doesn't belong on the road!

The Gear Vendors unit is $2600 for the 4R70W in a car as opposed to $2995 for RV's and Trucks. I went to the Supercoupe site and found that some people have installed it in a 4R70W equipped T-Bird. One guy claimed that it took 2 hours; to install however I doubt that!

I am really curious to see the outcome of logres turbo project. If it works out and the smog natzi's don't give him a hard time I may consider it. The turbo in the back of the car is totally opposite of what I learned all of those years ago. I was tought that turbo's rely on heat more than they do simply exhaust gas velocity; however I did read an article recently of such a rear turbo install on a late model Camaro that was reasonably succesfull! Good luck with the project

ya i have a 70 trim turbo setting in my garage and i was going to build a "sts" turbo kit for my car. i dont have to worry about the smog B/S cuz im in florida and they dont care about that stuff here. i have heard they are gonna start checking that stuff though i hope not cuz none of my cars/trucks have cats. the only problem i see with the rear mount setup in the mark is where to run the pipes back up front. there is barley enough room for single exhaust let alone running awhole new pipe back up front and trying to fish it up to the intake. i would deff like to hear how it turns out though.

Run a meth kit with the supercharger and your engine will be fine I put between 5000-10000 on it before it blew up the trans and I took it off, the engine was perfect before and after. Maybe even cleaner after from running the windshield washer fluid through it. Def add the Meth kit, its amazing how much heat that will suck. You will NOT detonate even in Florida heat after a couple miles of beating on it. In fact I was in boost for maybe 30 seconds on a 150+mph run. Then I drove normal about 5 miles home, my intake manifold (not just the piping) was still just BARELY warm to the touch. This is after having driving it for about 20 minutes, and having been out of boost for about 5-10.

With a turbo you're going to have to fabricate quite a bit for it and you will have to build a bottom end, but it will also be a HELL of a lot faster, see boost sooner than a centrifugal, and the other innumerable advantages. The only reason for the supercharger is cost, fabrication time, and you don't need a bottom end with a Novi 1000.

I'm having the turbo installed by a STS licensed dealer - which is equivalent to STS installing it themselves.

In addition, I am going to get in touch with my local DMV, tell them what I plan to do, and have them sign off on it. If an emissions place gives me any hassle, I'll whip out my certified approval from DMV.

Those two documents should cover all the bases.

Did STS tell you whether or not anyone has ever attempted an install of one of their universal kits on a MK8 or MN12 car? As was mentioned earlier there is barely enough room for a dual exhaust under the car and adding a 4" or so intake pipe from turbo to intake manifold plus the lines for oiling of the turbo's is going to be difficult at the very least.

Nope, no Mark's yet.

Thanks for the heads up though. The shop that STS refered me to is top notch and only a few miles from my house. I'll take my car down there for their opinion before I purchase anything; if they don't think they can fit the piping, I'll abandon that project. Mine will be a little different because I'm only shooting for the single turbo, not twin.

My next best option is the Kenne Bell SC...which will be my next question to the speed shop guys if they can't do the STS.

If you get the system to fit maybe you can take some pictures so the rest of us can see how it was done. If you go Kenne Bell I know that you will like the outcome HP/Throottle response wise; however not as efficient as turbo's.

For myself I know that I can maximize the HP that I will have with a few more simple mods and run 13's without a loss in MPG. It may cost me some $'s but as I said it is a nice feeling to be driving in the middle of the night and know that I have well more than 400 miles between tanks of fuel! Good luck with the project and I am curious about the outcome!

Logres,
The STS stuff is nice, with some fab and mod skills it should fit in the M8 very nicely.
there's alot of rear overhang on these cars, lots of room in the rear 1/4 panel areas, where they typically hide the STS stuff.

Should be a cool project.. I say GO FOR IT!

and.. when and if the smog nazi's screw you.. BRING IT TO TEXAS.
We drag race nearly year round Jan-Oct or Early Nov!

Remember you need to pull the gas tank and then place a fuel cell in the trunk to gain space for the turbos, oil pump, filter and cooler. Also ditch the spare and jack as you will probably need that room as well and don't forget to get a AAA membership to fix your flats and bring you gas. LOL Honestly I want to see this project get put together.

I would obviously consult with the guys at the speed shop to review feasibility. If it requires what all of you said above, I'd be looking to do something else.
