Neon Rear Light & Blown Fuse-98 MarkVIII

Just experienced a twofold problem, namely - could not get the gear shifter out of park and no rear lights(brake and park) Fuse #32 was blown - replaced it - turned the ignition on - dropped it into gear and the fuse blew again. In order to start car I had to follow the manual instruction by applying the emerg brake, turn the ignition key just to the first notch, then drop the shifter into neutral and the car would start. I took the car to my local Ford dealer and they said there is a short in the neon light assembly and in order to stop the fuse from blowing they had to disconnect the harness. Well now my remote will not unlock the trunk nor will the inside button release the trunk and my parking lights will not go on which is especially bad at nighttime. The brake lights now work and the fuse does not blow and I can start the car the normal way. Still not a good situation. HELP FROM LOD LAND NEEDED. Thanks in advance.

glitchm@hotmail.com Send an email to glitch and he can sell you a new ballest for your rear neon lamp. Comes with instructions for replacing. I did mine as did a ton of others now. Very typical problem with these older Gen II Marks.

Also...you can remove the trunk lining inside the trunk lid and just unplug the balast attached to the backside of the neon tail light and than plug back in the trunk harness so your trunk popper will still work. :D That way you can drive at night while waiting for your new balast!

Got this response from Joe today...thanks to all that helped:

"This morning I took your response to my post to my local Ford dealer. Your response was about
making sure the harness is plugged in while the ballast should be unplugged. Well it turns out
that they had both unplugged and got it right as a result of your response. I think they were
somewhat embarrased.
They didn't even want to charge me - which they should not have. Anyway, thanks for your great
advice. The trunk popper works just fine and the park lights are on when the switch is in the
one position. The break lights are fine also. Really appreciate your response.
Joe "
