New best ET from small mods

Over the weekend I finally got around to installing the LMS icebox and capping off that air intake resonator thing. I was certainly shocked at the track when I learned I had gained 3 full tenths just from $52 worth of parts. 14.2@95mph w/ a 60' of 2.11, all are new personal bests and that was with plenty of tire hop. The gain was as much as I'd gotten from the $600 rear end w/ 3.73s or the $800 torque convertor.

So it seems to me if anyone has missed these little things go do them now and hopefully get the same results.

Looking over that intake resonator I can't imagine what its purpose was other than needlessly heat air going into the engine and therefore rob horsepower. $2 for a rubber PVC pipe cap at Home Depot took care of it quite nicely.

I believe in small mods. Individually, they may be so miniscule, most would say they aren't worth it. But ten times 0.01 of a second equals 0.1 seconds. IMHO, I have found every small mod to the intake improves performance, and taken together they provide a significant improvement.

I am pretty sure you did not gain .3 seconds from those mods. Rather the track conditions were much more favorable this time around. Unlike gears or a convertor, those mods would improve HP but change the ET very, very little. To see how much HP you gained you need to look at the MPH, not the ET. Very quick runs though.

Well the gain in trap speed is from a best of 93 to an average of 95.5. The 60' best improved to 2.11 from 2.15, both with wheelspin. The track temperature was about the same as it was when I got the 14.5 as was the level of tire spin off the line. Even the gas tank was about 3/4 full for both sets of runs.

Ignoring the best results, the averages for about 4 runs before and after went from 14.64@92.5 to 14.35@95.5. That is a greater increase in trap speed than I'd ever gotten before with the gears or TC. I agree it seems inexplicable and doesn't look like those things should have made such a difference. I'm just reporting my results.

To gain 3mph you need a lot more than the "LMS icebox".
Unless this magix box gives you 20-30hp.

RE: New best ET from small mods

This is precisely why one needs to log conditions during track runs. xo

To accurately evaluate performance gains of a particular component, every other component must be the same or equal. On the car that is easy enough, even down to weighing the car and driver in race form. But comparing different runs on different days will require you to adjust the atmospheric conditions to a known baseline.

To do this requires recording real time track temperature, humidity and absolute barometer. You can then take such variables and calculate specific correction factors for ET and MPH. Even then, physical track conditions become a prevalent variable. In further analysis, statistics can filter out minor variables such as track conditions or other anomalies. In doing so, data from several runs over varying conditions will be required to have a large enough sample to establish a standard deviation.

I don't think a case was being made claiming XX HP for YY mod, but only a presentation of a best ET after small mods. Everyone who has a mod on their car believes it works, and everyone who believes it doesn't work has no such mod on their car. Period.

Regardless, no one believes anything but back to back dyno runs anyways. But, I've been told 'dyno runs don't win races'! Now excuse me while I order a Fuel Magnet and a Tornado device. :+
