New Car

Hi,
I just got a '97 Continental with 80K mi about a month ago. This is only my second car (I'm 20). I must say so far I've been very impressed with the car. For only $7,000 it is one hell of a car. All of my friends initially gave me grief for getting an old man's car, but quickly changed their opinion the first time they rode in all that luxury. I couldn't find a nicer car for twice as much. To the point I have a couple of questions.

1-The air suspension-If I turn off the air suspension switch in the trunk does that only disable the rear auto-level feature? I'm just kind of worried about the air bags going out eventually, (my grandfather had a 91 Conti, $3000 to replace). I don't really mind losing the auto-level since I never load the car down, or would this have any adverse effects?

2-The seat heaters- The original window sticker shows the car being equipped with heated seats. However I cannot find the controls for them. The manual makes it appear they should be located directly below the climate control, where I have a cubby bin. So is this just an error on the sticker?

3-Air Filters- I would kind of like to keep this car mostly stock, my previous car I think I went a little too far with stuff and ended up with a fairly tacky car (hey I was 16). Anyway, I was thinking about adding an aftermarket cone air filter (K&N). My main goal isn't so much performance as I just think since the car has such a nice growl already I think a filter would sound awesome. My previous car just has a K&N with some tubing I rigged and it made a huge difference in sound. But with the Lincoln I want something that looks a little more finished.

Thanks, Chris

RE: New Car

I can't help on the other stuff, but as far as the air suspension goes, the air springs will go bad in time with or without the suspension switch on. There pretty easy to change out when its time, so don't worry about it. You might as well enjoy the load leveling part.

RE: New Car

Chris,

Welcome to the board.

The switch in the trunk to turn off the air ride is to prevent the system from inflating and delating when it is being jacked up or on a lift. As Eddie stated, it will not make the system last longer and you will be disabling the compressor and the leveling feature.

I don't know whre the heated seat switches are on the Continental.

You may want to adapt one of the aftermarket filter boxes that are made for Mark VIII's for your Continental to make it a neater set-up.

RE: New Car

Thanks for the help. What are some of the companies that make the air filters or boxes for the Mark VIII? Chris
