'New' MK VIII driving impression report and HELP needed!

My first Lincoln arrived today! It's a '98 Mark VIII Base, and I put some info about it over in the Introduction forum. But, I have a couple of stupid newbie questions.

I can't open the fuel filler door. I press the button on the driver's door I hear a 'clunk' from the rear, but when I try to manually open the door, no dice. Pressing on the fuel filler door, it has a little movement, a little slack, and pulling on it won't open it .. :( Before I get out the crowbar.... hehe .. has anyone had this problem or know what I'm doing wrong?

My first driving impression is great!! The thing I was the most surprised at was the handling. Firm and sweet. A more firm feeling than I expected, and I am in Luv.

I didn't get an owner's manual, so I don't know if I can turn the Traction Control on and off. The O/D button works fine as does everything else that I have played with, so far, except for the fuel filler door.

The CD changer for the JBL system has been removed from the trunk, and I knew this in advance, so for now its radio only, but I have the cure with a memory stick that holds a zillion MP3's and a cassette adapter

Now I just need FUEL!! .. HELP!!! :)

If the fuel door doesn't pop after pressing the button, there should be a pull lever inside the trunk to trigger a manual release.

Or another choice is to hit the button a few times in a row...that worked on the Continental I had sometimes.

you can try searching on the fuel door, i think that has come up a few times and fixes were posted.

For the OM I have the 97 in PDF format, just about the same as the 98, i can't post it due to the file size restriction on the forum. PM me you e-mail and i will send it to you.

There should be a manual fuel door release in the trunk. If it is not immediately visible, look behind the trunk liner in the vicinity of the fuel door.

You can lurk on ebay and eventually find an owners manual.

Good luck with the new ride! :)

Well, once you get some gas in it....

To turn off the TC, hit Vehicle Setting on the Message Center console (Traction Control is On should show on the display), then hit Reset.

Welcome again.

The fuel door has a few possibilities. I had to use the pull tab on my first mark until i replaced the fuel door button. I know a few people who have parts stockpiles. Most of them are on here. You can also buy a little tab that basically overrides the door on ebay cheap. Not a big fan of those though.

Traction control off is fun!!! If you turn the car off and turn it back on, you will have to change your settings again. :)

Factory repair manuals are a good investment. It's like knowing everything there is to know about your car.

Ant questions or needs, just ask. Micah

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for all the help. I notice now that I should have put the post in the Tech section.

I found some more Fuel Door info on Search that I didn't see the first time I tried and I appreciate the all the tips. Also, thanks for the owner's manual PDF link, but it is asking me for a LogIn on the site that has it, so I can't get to it. I PM'd Steve for his '97 version PDF, but if there is a '98 version at the link I can't login to, that would be even better.

Anyhow, thanks!

Ed

There's a spring that's supposed to pop the fuel door out when you press the button or pull the manual release. It's broken. Pull the manual release and stick your fingers in the edge of the fuel door and pull it out at the same time. Use a credit card or something if you have to. Pulling the manual release will undo the latch and the spring is supposed to pop it out, but since the springs broken, you have to pull it out while you're pulling the release. My '93 has the same problem.
