(dirty underneath-needs cleaning!)

Unbelievable how FAST things happen.

5 months ago, our friend picked up a 1985 Chevy S-10 pick up off an auction out of Texas. When the truck got here, it was exactly as described, except the motor. He wasnt too happy, because the motor was it's best feature(for him). he raced it a few times, and decided to park it while he builds his own set up. In the mean time, he raced his trusty El Camino(he's tough at the track...champ 2 out of 4 years)

fast forward...a couple months ago, he decided to sell it...$8900 turn key. Not many came a knockin'...I was interested, but not for near $9000. Besides we already had a race car.

Well, yesterday we loaded up and went to the annual labor day drags, and nothing was unusual. However, when we got to the track, the guy who sold us our dart comes over and says "hey, if you are still interested in Mike's truck, he dropped the price...he might even drop it lower for you. Go talk to him."

well, we went and had a pow-wow...Brenda still hadn't seen the truck, but ALWAYS wanted a race truck...she was pretty excited. So, we find out that he's selling it with no motor or trans...EVERYTHING else comes with it. We struck a price, and then told him I'd need a few days to come up with the cash. I knew I had to first sell our Dart, which might not be too easy.

WRONG

it was on craigslist for less than 15 minutes when I got an email about it. I didnt check my email for hours, but when I did, I checked the time stamp...12 minutes since I submitted the ad. The guy drove up with a trailer, and bought it for my asking price...cash.

we drove down to the truck's owner's house so Brenda could sit in it, and really check it out...she fell in love with it.

We will probably be picking it up Thursday, or this weekend.

Tommy, Joe, and Marc are ALL Chevy guru's...they pretty much had our motor "built" on paper with parts they have had in stock for a while...trans/converter are ready...need some basic parts(carb, distributor/ignition set up, etc), and then install it. We might be running 11 second passes in a few weeks, if all goes well.

I am thrilled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so...details for you drag fans:

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Wow, I'm impressed. Those little drag trucks are usually pretty quick. Glad things worked for you as they did. Good luck with it and be careful! :)

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Thanks guys...well, it will run whatever we build it to run...right now we're thinking mid-11's is what we'd like to shoot for...that's what it ran with the last N/A set up that was in it, with a power-glide...but this truck needs a 3-speed, so we're going TH400...

That's the scary part. Short wheelbase, lightweight and big power. Somewhere down that road it is no longer driving, it is hanging on for the ride! }(

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Well, it's official...went and handed over the cash and picked up the truck tonight. It's OURS!!! Title, and all!

the greatest thing also happened tonight. The truck was sold with no motor or trans...we were going to have to build a motor, and get a trans for it.

For a motor, that meant everything, including heads. But there are also things like dampner(sfi approved harmonic balancer) starter, flywheel, waterpump, etc etc etc.

The seller had the old set up out, and apart...we ended up getting the truck, the block(355, 4-bolt main) with steel crank, "Pink" rods, the cam, the heads(Brodix aluminum Big boys!), CSI electric waterpump, alternator with mounting bracket, starter, SFI approved dampner, roller-rockers, pushrods, Brodix intake, Demon 850 carb, K&N tall-man air cleaner, a slightly used set of massive slicks,...I could go on....basically, the heads arent right for this motor combo, but since the seller was offering every little part we'd need to build it, for dirt cheap, we took it. The heads we'll save for when we build a serious motor, and for now, we'll just slap on a basic set of heads to go racing while we build up something along the lines of a 383 stroker motor.

Bottom line is this... we're now a week+ away from racing, instead of a month, and we're about $2500 UNDER budget....

this is so awesome.

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Ahead of time and under budget - don't get no better than that! :)

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

I talked to my buddy Joe(my engine builder, and fellow Mark VIII guy)
with those heads(Brodix T1's), manifold, and carb, cam specs, and pistons, and after decking the block, we should be able to eek 600hp at the flywheel. Might even be able to run pump-gas!

Looks like those 11 second time slips will come a tad easier....man I'm getting excited!

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Nice pickup Craig (pun intended), I don't see how you are going to get 600hp flywheel from a 350 with those parts, maybe with no accessories on an engine dyno... not that i'm an expert with old school Chevy 350's but 600hp at the flywheel NA isn't your ordinary run of the mill 350, hell a brand new LS1 with AFR heads, nastiest cam and fully built engine would be lucky to see 600hp at the flywheel.

>I don't see how you are going to get 600hp flywheel from a 350 with >those parts,

we'll see.

>maybe with no accessories on an engine dyno...

Ummm...that's the plan. Flywheel HP...motor...dyno....

the only accessories will be an alternator, with a manual toggle to shut it off during the run...no other "accessories".

>not that i'm an expert with old school Chevy 350's but 600hp at the >flywheel NA isn't your ordinary run of the mill 350, hell a brand new >LS1 with AFR heads, nastiest cam and fully built engine would be >lucky to see 600hp at the flywheel.

well, 700+ HP out of a SBC is actually THE most common drag racing set up on the planet. Most dragsters run a 725-850hp mill.

Dont worry, I'll bring you a build sheet...585 is the calculated number(on paper), but we know...on paper, and on dyno can end up being two different things...

all i can say is....if we can click off 11.20's in a 3300lb sled, we're doing ok. Chassis is key here, and this truck has an Alston back half/ladder bar set up with HAL adjustables, and 16.5" ET streets.

using one of several HP calculators, we get this feedback:

"Horsepower Results - 1/4 Mile Method

Your s-10 truck weighs about 3450 pounds(with driver) and can complete a 1/4 mile in about 11.40 seconds. That means that you've got about 460.25 HP at the wheels, and about 598.32 HP at the flywheel."

Can't be right...

Your Mark VIII weighs about 4050 pounds and can complete a 1/4 mile in about 13.545 seconds. That means that you've got about 322.11 HP at the wheels, and about 418.74 HP at the flywheel.

.

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Any calculator which computes power from ET is obviously wrong... find a calculator which computes power from race weight and MPH and it's damn close and probably more reliable than your local dyno machine.

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

I agree Serge...the desktop dyno computer program we use also computes using variables such as density/altitude, traction, slippage%, cam lift/duration, etc...it goes in to quite a bit of detail.

the engine Joe is building comes up at 578hp +/- 1.5% at the flywheel, just shy of 600, which is consistent with the HP:mph(trap speed) calculator we have used.

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

well Serge...looks like we'll never know.
we went with a different camshaft to broaden the rpm power range, decided to keep the existing intake, and tone down the motor a bit for longevity, as my budget doesnt have room to build a 600hp small block.

the numbers indicate we can run 11.50's at about 116 (+/-) mph with the current 10.8:1 set up.

zero decked, comp cams stick/lifters/pushrods, steel crank, and shifting about 6300-6500 will help keep this mill alive for a long time...it's going together "loose" to withstand some serious racing, instead of winding it up tight for that "low ET"....I'd rather race a little slower for a long time, than crank out some serious numbers, and have to take it apart every 200 passes.

468 hp is the current set up... we'll see if it holds.

we also used a plastic dummy block, and empty turbo-400 case to mock up the fitment through the stock floor/tunnel...all looks good....sent the driveshaft out and had it cut/rebalanced, and the engine is being assembled as we speak...

we'll have it out next wednesday, if all goes well.

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

well, a lot has happened since we got the truck, but it's finally running/driving. The waterpump is weeping through the weep hole, so even though the seller gave it to us with the truck, It is a bummer...$280 for a new one(remember, this was a budget build up, first time around).

Oh well...it's definately a beast...I took it for a ride around the block yesterday...nothing like a killer street-legal race vehicle that has potential 11 second power(we'll see).

BEAST!!!

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

Holy crap, 4.88 gears? You should get those gears installed in your Mark VIII for a little bit Craig...

RE: New race vehicle!!!!!

well, when stalling it up on the trans-brake, it easily hit 4200 rpms...and low and behold, that's because there was a 4200 CHIP in the 2-step....we took that out, and the truck stalls a 4700 rpms. What a free-revving little peanut motor.

massive rear tires, ladder-bar set up, 4700 rpm launch, 6600 rpm shifts(for now), 4.88 gears, screaming through the flowmasters, this thing sounds like the old NMCA cars used to

....I cant wait.
