RE: New system

is it a 386 or a 486 :+

Some impressive stuff. Is that the $4900 dollar one that comes with the serious 24/7 support and membership benefits I was reading about a few days ago?

RE: New system

Dual TRS-80's

I've wanted a dual Xeon sys for a while, and was gonna' just build one. but for the price, and for the CASE, it was a no-brain-er. I can use this as my server & still play half-life 2.

$5400...don't laugh at me....Even I know it's ALOT to spend but this system will last me for at least 5-6 years, I hope.

RE: New system

The cool thng is I've got a 320 SCSI card and 5 72g drives from my old server (faster, better, farther...wait no that the 6 million dollar man) anyway, should have enough room for the .NET & SQL guys. If not I'll rip out my two old 160g SATA drives and use those, NO more money in my buget!!!

Man I just can't wait to get this out of the box!!!

My wife laughs, and said I'm like a kid at X-mas.

RE: New system

Damn, talk about overkill.

I have an Athlon XP 2400+, and it's plenty fast for me.

RE: New system

Was the stock mark fast enough for you...me either.
"It's all in how you use it..."
I need a sys that can do many process', apps, etc. at once. And still run my games. lol.
The Adobe Creative Suite by it's self sucks the life out of your sys, plus running a web server, SQL server, and exchange server and once the guys start to muck aroung in .NET, forget about it....but really I just wanted a top of the line, won't be out dated in two-three years, kick-ass sys full of all the bells and "AIR HORNS"

So what if the kid goes to Vasser instead.

Let's see, I'll put my 400Mhz Pentium II with ASUS P3BF mobo, 684MB PC133 RAM, 6GB Maxtor HD, 10GB Fujitsu HD, 4xATI 8MB Video Card, 5.1 Soundblaster Live Value!, Adaptec 2930Ultra SCSI card connected to an 8x Yamaha CDRW and a 100MB ZIP Drive, 8X (READ) DVD-ROM Drive, Pinnacle Capture/TV Card, MS wireless intellimouse, 17" FAT Screen Monitor (not Flat Screen) , connected to the Net via a Netgear Wireless G card all running Red Hat Fedora Core 3...up against your fancy AlienWare box anyday!

</sarcasm>

Seriously though, that system was state of the art at one time (1998). Of course I was running the new and improved Windows 98 SE instead of FC3. It's wierd to look back and see what we once considered cutting edge. One day not too far from now, you'll look back and wonder how you ever lived with such a machine. ;(

I do still have the system above and use it to screw around with Linux, but I also have a P4 system that's my normal workhorse. The one you described has me drooling! Dual Xeons! Oh Yeah! :)

RE: New system

Same here, I got 3 old PII 200mhz all running different flavors of linux like a champ. Linux just uses the hardware much better. The old Pentiums were like the old slant 6...you can't kill'em. I remember when I got my RAMBUS sys, I didn't think It'd ever get any better then that. lol.

Although I'll be playing many a game on it, be sure of that, this box is for work, mostly, maybe, we'll see...

On another note, I love SCSI, CD-roms, HDDs, you name it.
If they offered SCSI in that sys...OOHH YEA BABY - SMOKEN'!!!!

RE: New system

I remember when we upgraded from my 6 mhz 286 to a 486DX2 66 mhz with 8 mb ram and 2 mb video ram. Plus we had a 15" SVGA monitor. That computer was top of the line at the time. SB16 audio, 2x CD-ROM, and a 14.4kbps modem.

If it makes you happy, thats the formost justification.

Now I like that one!!!

and a 14.4kbps modem.
[/div]

Uhgug, I remember those 14.4's dial into AOL, walk away, get lunch, come back, and 45 min. later it's just signing on.

Man cable rocks, 4.2 Mb/s, now I hear tell of some end to end fiber optic in FL, YES!!! right to my house w/ that pipe.
GIGABIT SPEED INTERNET!!!!

RE: New system

Congrats! It's all Latin to me though. ;)

But I do understand - I've just gotten to a point where yesterday's technology still suits my needs (finally). I guess I need to play better games. :7

RE: New system

They called it Moore’s Law; technology doubles every 18 months…That’s why everything got outdated so fast before. Well it changed to 20 months, then 22 last I heard, so it turned out not to be a law, no matter what Intel say.

They can double the speed of CPU’s; certainly they can make a 7-8 GHz processor now, what they can’t do is get the CPU to use less voltage to dissipate heat or run cool enough w/o using liquid nitrogen or the like, making your computer about the size of your dishwasher, not fun. I’m sure there are other factors, but the time of it being a law is over. We went too far too fast, while not thinking of the rest of the sys. And that’s why a sys made 3-4 years ago can still be useful today, of course if you want to play the latest; you have to have the greatest…kind of corny I guess, forget I said it!

Edit: i just reread, forgive my rambling it's been a long day, am very sleepy...

RE: New system

Hey not to be offending or anything but it seems like everything is pretty much top of the line and at $5400.... I'd think you could have gotten the best graphic card setup... Like 2 GF 6800 ULTRAs in SLI mode... or a Radeon 850XL or just one 6800 Ultra. But damn I wish I had your system  . Alienware IS AWSOME!

RE: New system

Wow, that is some system. I am running a 3200+AMD system with an ASUS board with RAID0 with two SATA 200 gigabyte drives. I love it except that often I need to shut down the power supply on the back of the computer before it will start up. It seems to be a defect of the motherboard. This is the second one.

I remember my first computer in 1995 - 200 megahertz. Everyone was amazed at its one gigabyte hard drive. Wow, people said, that is so big, you will never fill it up. Now Windows operating system is bigger than a gigabyte.

RE: New system

No offence taken, nothing can compare to what my wife is saying!!! In order to get the dual Xeon cpu's, I had to get a workstation and they only offered, an ATI X600, or the 6800, the rest were all ATI Fire and Nividia Quatro lines, all very, very nice but I'm not doing any C.A.D. or was I willing to pay $1200-$1500 more for a video card, I could have gotten the dual PCI-X 6800, but again I think it was $1200 for the dual setup plus the price of the extra card so like another $1900-$2200. The 6800 GT PIC-X w/ 256 of DDR3 is fine for any game I'll be playing for the next 5 years or so. Also the thing I really love is the fact that the Xeon's are the EM64T's...64 bit, I know there's only one game SO FAR for 64 bit processors but in the next couple years, when Longhorn comes out, if ever, that's 64 bit, I'm sure some apps will be 64 bit by 2007, at least some I can buy.

RE: New system

I built my whole computer for under a grand. And it's faster than i need it to be.
