I remember my first computer in 1995 - 200 megahertz. Everyone was amazed at its one gigabyte hard drive. Wow, people said, that is so big, you will never fill it up. Now Windows operating system is bigger than a gigabyte.AlexanderBoard of Directors Lincolns of Distinction

Was that 200mhz sys a Packard Bell?
I had one, top of the line multi-media PC!!! (for the time) I remember the same - "WOW...A GIG DRIVE!!!"

Bill Gates is quoted as saying while developing windows 95, "640k should be enough for anyone..." later he said that no one would ever fill up a 860mb hard drive...

The thing w/ your sys sounds like you have to reset the the on/off switch, or rather the switch is not resetting like it should, hence you have to rest it by powering down the constant 12volts to the board, and powering back up. Try to look for a bios update for your board, if you haven't already, just a thought.

RE: New system

Oh, that's right forgot all about that, I may load the 64-bit ver. of server 2003 just to check out certain functionalities of it.

RE: New system

For the hell of it, I put together a new pC at newegg.com. Let's see...

Dual Xeons w/EMT64, 10GB of RAM, Dual 19" LCDs, nVIDIA 6800 Ultra, a coupel of Seagate Cheetahs, Three Plextor DVD burners, and a bunch of other ####...only came out to $11,000!!!

RE: New system

The old computer was a Compaq Presario. I got a Compaq a few years later with a Q function. It was an interface on top of Windows. the computer when first turned on was narated by the Q character form Star Trek.

This ASUS motherboard is the second motherboard of the same type that has the same problem. Updates don't seem to change the problem.

RE: New system

Is this a great country or what? We get to make buying decisions that make US happy. But for me, I'd rather have a 52" Plasma TV [link:digbig.com/4cngn| AND a 20" G5 iMac.]

I do like Alowishus's  attitude though. If you're going to get something, spend a little more & get what you like the best.

RE: New system

Well I got the 42" plasma, I used to work at Gateway before they sent all their employees am Email on April fool's day saying we're all fired, nice touch huh? So I got one of those tv's at a GREAT price, other wise I'd never get a Getway plasma tv.
That said I've wanted a Mac for a long, long time; a dual G5,
[drool on the keyboard] w/ a 23-24" monitor...
But I get to mess w/ one at work from time to time... unbeatable video images.

Only $11000, like the Seagates...
w/ dual flat planels, dual PCI-X video, more ram and HDD space the sys I got could have gone for about that...that's more than I spent for the MARK, would be pretty nice though.

RE: New system

What's with the server CPU setup? Do you plan on playing games? If I had my choice with Alienware then I would have gone with the Aurora™ ALX .

The ALX was my 1st pick, but it didn't have the "MUPH" I wanted, the dual setup is not just a server thing, the 3.2ghz I have now just can't keep up w/ all the apps I run at once, PhotShop, Illustrator, Encore DVD, music, email, web-browser, word...that's about what I have running at any given time, and w/ dual DVD burners(I will add the 2nd one) I can burn two disks at the same time while having my apps running, not that I burn more than one copy of a movie mind you ;).

The second-cheapest AMD 64 (3000+) outperforms all P4s except the 3.8GHz model. So the 1.8GHz 3000+ is better than Intel's 3.6, 3.4, 3.2, 3.0, 2.8, 2.6, 2.4
[/div]

I'm SOOO on the other side of that, I'm all Intel, but I hate the rant and rave people; it's like the windows vs linux feud.
Anyhoo one thing though; you are comparing apples to nuts. The P4's ARE NOT 64 bit as the AMD's are...to be correct you'd have to compare the AMD 64 to Intel Itanium's or Xeon's for performance, price however is another thing...

RE: New system

I understand the circuit layout, the pipeline, the cache, hyper-transport vs. hyper-threading; it’s not that…I believe the whole comparison is invalid. You are taking AMD’s top of the line, A number 1 chip and putting it up against Intel’s middle of the road chip. If you compare a Porsche 959 to a Volkswagen Jetta, and come away saying the Porsche wins, well…no duh. It’s a fixed fight. Would you say the Porsche won because of the way it was build?

It’s a flawed and biased test from the start.

I don’t take anything away from AMD, they’re LATEST chip are very good, unlike the ones of the past.
Intel’s the big, slow, power sucking, heat blasting, money burning full size SUV of the chip world, and AMD’s the small, quick, sleek, 2 seater sports car…it’s fun as hell to fly around w/ the top down on a summers day, but it doesn’t move the groceries well, or pick the kids up, or bring home stuff from home depot, etc.etc.

I don’t know thought it’d be a cool analogy!!

RE: New system

I believe the AMD64s are in the same class as the Prescotts (on the LGA775 socket). Look at that chart, why would Anandtech compare CPUs from different classes?

A Xeon would be comparable to an Opteron, not a 64.

RE: New system

Would you put a V4 and a V8 in a race together and expect them to have the same results?
Would you consider this a fair test?
32-bit vs 64-bit this is all I'm saying, P4, opteron, pipeline, cache...it's not a true test of each CPU to put them in a test. Anandtech is comparing the two as desktop CPU's.

Of course this is just my thoughts on the whole thing...

RE: New system

You're missing the point, it isn't the 64-bit feature of the AMD64 that makes it faster. Pricewise the AMD is better, even the middle-of-the-road AMD64s beat out the P4 EE (which cost hundreds of dollars).

I'm not an AMD fanboy, I have a 2.6GHz P4. It's okay to say that AMD is the king in gaming right now.

RE: New system

I'm not a AMD hater, I will readly admit AMD is top gun right now. And like I stated in my last post it's just my thoughts on the results, I don't feel it's valid. You're missing my point, 64 bit doesn't have to make it faster; it's a differnt class of CPU....it's in the 64 bit class the P4 is in the 32-bit. That's all, to me they're not comparing the same things.

Price wise I saw a AMD FX for $800 the other night on newegg...now that's 64 bit...

RE: New system

Minesweeper ought to SCREAM on that system!

Seriously, I'm extremely jealous. My old AMD 1.4 Ghz Thunderbird finally bit the dust and I've had to move my HDD to an old Gateway PII 350 for the time-being. No more late-night Call of Duty marathons for a while. My budget being as it is, I'm going to have to build a new machine piece-meal. First up is a new processor and mobo. Definitely going with Athlon 64, probably 3400+. Then I'll replace that Geforce3. The rest (sound card, DVD/CD drives, etc.) I can keep from the old system.
