Newbie mileage expectations

I'm new to the Mark Viii [only had her for a month] 1996 LSC. I have been tracking the mileage closely over the past 30 days just to get a handle on "Normal"?? My mileage has been consistent at 18 mpg on regular gas and only around town. [yes, I know the mfg specs premium but the car isn't complaining about reg gas, yet]
Is this "Normal" or should I expect more? [I have been keeping the foot under control just to get a benchmark] I am pulling a P0300 code, random missfire which only shows up at idle..so........
Plugs and wires are on the to do list as I think the current items are original.
Also, what gears are in the 96 LSC rear end?
Thanks again.

I believe the lsc has 3.27 gears. Not ideal for around town. I have a 98 base model which has 3.08 and get about 17-18 around town. I could use some new plugs though. On the instate I can get 27 easy and up to 32 if I try.

Also I think you are supposed to use at least 91 octane.

its a 3800lb car with a dated 4 speed transmission and a 4.6 liter V8. 18mpg is decent.

I averaged about 21mpg in mine before i did the gears and then 15-16 mpg after, and I always used premium.

You'll always have ppl that say they get 30-32mpg, but that's on the freeway with a tailwind, it doesn't reflect real driving.

This is a good website for tracking consumption...

I really did get 32 driving from Destin FL (Panhandle) to Orlando weather was nice so I didn't need the a/c and was able to keep the windows up, and I was getting paid by the hour so I kept it between 65 and 70 mph, both the computer and my math confirmed it.

Downhill, instant MPG with a tailwind!!!

May have been down hill over all half driving east half driving south so I don't know about a tail wind. I don't know what to tell you bit that's what I got. 93 octane and slightly over inflated tires as always with me.

I could get 19 mpg average driving the interstate across the mountains to the track, racing the '93 all day and driving back with 4.10 gears.

Even with 4.30 gears, last year I observed close to similar mileage in the '93 when stopping for fuel when we were caravaning to/from Carlisle with the stock '06 Town Car and the '96 Mark VIII sporting 4.10s.

I think that's low mileage.

I also think you can't compare "around town" mileage.

Around town mileage depends on how many stop lights and stop signs you sit at. These cars get their worse fuel mileage accelerating from stops.

Also, what is around town, driving around New York city or Mayberry?:D

19 mpg on the interstate with 410 gears. OK that's impressive. What's your tach reading at 70 mph?
Guess I need to attend to the plugs and wires asap.

I wanna add that there have been several threads about the "savings" by using regular gas vs premium. I believe JP did the calculations and you only save $1.64 PER TANK using regular. That is mainly because your car is more efficiently running on premium so you will use less gas per mile. I always use premium, your ignition parts, cats, and engine components will last longer and thank you.

All LSC's have 3.27 gears and you're going to get better "around town" mileage vs a base with 3.07 gears. Highway will be the opposite.

With "Whiner" I get 20 MPG on the highway (3:73 gears), based on the old fashion method of actual gas put into the tank as the computer doesn't work with the new fuel tables.
