NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

Yep..it's true. After many, many months of research, many hours of searching, and plenty of second guessing myself, I've bought a different car to replace my 1997 LSC I sold. I had been going back and forth between a Lexus GS400 and a Jaguar XJR. Both cars have qualities that remind me of the Mark. And both have qualities that make them better than the Mark. It was such a tough decision for me..it really was. I'm still not even sure I made the right decision, but on Tuesday I pick up my 1998 Lexus GS400. My heart (and ego??) wanted the XJR very badly. It's a great, great car. Stupendously fast too. But in the end, I was a little put off by the higher running costs of the Jag (insurance 30% more than Lexus, lower fuel mileage, higher parts cost, depreciation that makes the Mark look like an investment). I hope I won't regret not having 370HP and being able to say "That's my Jag". The GS400 was a more sensible choice. But the GS is also an amazing car. It's very fast, and is much torquier than the Mark, which I really liked. It is quieter (alot), better built, and will certainly be more reliable than the XJR. There is suprisingly alot of aftermarket support for the GS as well. I also lucked out by finding a rare color for my GS400. It's more of an elegant colour than a sporty colour, which is fine by me. It's one of those colours that look bad in a photo, but just great in person. The colour is Antique Bronze Mica on tan leather. Here's a pic of the colour: http://www.clublexus.com/gallery/data/500/3146erickG-med.jpg

I got my GS400 for only $22,000 CDN, with all the service books up to date. I was pleased to see it never had an unscheduled service. All in all, I'm real happy with my purchase, and I'm sure I'm going to have many trouble free miles of fun with this car. You really feel a sense of accomplishment after shopping for so long to find the "right" car. I'll still be hanging around and saying hello from time to time, but I have to start going over to the Lexus board to learn my car inside and out. So what's everyone's opinion of the GS400??

Congratuation on your purchase.

It is really too bad that Lincoln does not have anything competitive to that Lexus.

Great choice Ron, congrats man. I was THIS close from buying a 98 LS in that color on thursday. Good luck with your new high 13, low 14 sec car ;)

Dont forget to check out www.ClubLexus.com been there for some time, some great friendly crowd with a lot to offer. The aftermarket parts for this car is amazing, with a wide selection to choose from. By the way, did you get the Nukamchi sound system? lets us know how much you like it.

Enjoy, you've earned this one.

RE: NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

I've also been going to ClubLexus for some time!! What's your screen name? Mine's the same. According to the guys there, Antique Bronze Mica is among the rarest colours for a GS. I lucked out...So when will you be joining the Lexus family again??

RE: NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

my mom had her corolla from 82 to about 94 and only had to change out a belt or 2. she couldnt have had the oil changed on that thing very many times either. she bought a new corolla after that one.

RE: NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

There is no denying that toyotas are reliable. Just look at the resale values and reliability ratings etc etc. Besides i've been in a couple of 200k+ mile 4 runners and they still ran pretty damn good.

Ron i think you made a wise choice. I love the GS series, ever since i sat in a fully loaded GS430 with navigation system etc etc. Gotta say the interior on a LS430 is better but the perfomance isn't there. I think if i'm going to replace my mark in a year or two it'll be a GS as well very very good choice.
Did you think about a 540i? Before you got this lexus?? Just wondering.

RE: NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

Max,

I've never been a fan of the BMWs. For a new car, they are 3rd, or 4th for reliability, which isn't bad. At 3-5 years old, they slip to 15th!! Lexus is first new, first after the 3rd-5th year for reliability. I had a friend who had a 5 Series, and it seemed the dealer was its' second home. And the prices were scary high. Like the Lincoln, the prices for the Lexus aren't overly cheap, but they aren't as much as the Euro-cars. The BMW 5 is nice handling, sharper than the GS even, but after being coddled by the boat like Mark VIII, I just couldn't drive something as sporty feeling as the BMW. The GS is a VERY nice compromise. Very very nearly as smooth as the Mark VIII over even the ugliest roads, but not nearly as floaty, and definitely more flickable. As I said..as very nice compromise. Overall I'm very happy with it, and will be doing a few slight mods soon. SO I'll post my before/after dyno pulls.

RE: NEWSFLASH!! I bought a new car!!

Ron, she's a beaut! What an awesome color. It must be rare because I am in the SF bay area(thousands of GS's) and have yet to lay eyes on that color.

I wont venture too far off topic, but I would lay my money down on a Toyota for reliability over ANY other car manufacturer in the world. I ran a shop for 7 years, and most of the Toyota's that pulled in were either 4-Runners for more A/T tires, or someone looking for directions.

You strike me as an intelligent consumer(even though you bought a Jeep-he he), and we both know that you did VERY well with the Toyot-errr, I mean Lexus.

Happy motoring.
p.s. the "bling" looks tastefully done on that car. Nice touch.

I am lovin' the look of that car with the color and rims. Very nice. Like Max said, it is not a problem to make those cars a little faster.
