No A/C mean bad blend doorr?

J

OCCUPY LoD :)
So...my stepdad calls me the other day and says his A/C isn't working anymore. The compressor is kicking on but there is NO cold air getting into the car. He lives 7 hours away and I'll be checking it out next week, but any input on the common "blend door" issue would be great.

As far as I new it only effected the heating function because it would break and go into the closed position, meaning NO hot air would enter the vents. Am I right?

Also, the blend door was already replaced about 30K miles ago.

Ok...thats what I'm gonna check first. I should see it move when switching from Hot to Cold right?

I had he same issue. He needs to add freon. My compressor kicked in but the air wasn't blowing cold. Then Gen 2s seem to have more AC discharge problems.

Hmmm........that seems wierd. You'd think with semi-low freon, the compressor would cycle often, but his is working fine. Thanks for the info...I'm checking it out on Monday. If the blend door is bad, I'll be changing it for him (not next week) and I'll do a nice write-up in it....for the mystery tech forum. :)

First find out if it's blowing at all....hot or cold. It may be the blower wiring problem. It is works in "HOT", then switch to cold and reach under and pull (or push) the rod. If you get cold air, it's the dreaded blend door....

Thanks Bud...will do. Like I said...I tried diagnosing it over the phone with a 62 y/o man that doesn't know crap about cars so you can kinda see how that went, lol.

if the compressor is not cycling often and running constant then it doesnt need freon. just because it is soooooooooooo common i'll bet you a box of krispy kreme's its the blend door. just open the glove box and watch the linkage when you select heat to ac, if it doesnt move, its broken! if you are the one who does the blend door jesse, email me i will give you my procedure to do the job in less than 90 minutes, i'm not giving out my secrets, so i'll email it to you. its the easiest job in the world to do on the mark! i can also get you the blend door at my cost cheap, brand new from ford and its not the old style, it wont break again.

Most systems have a low-pressure safety cutout that will disable the compressor if there isn't enough refrigerant in the system.

jesse, email me i will give you my procedure to do the job in less than 90 minutes, i'm not giving out my secrets.

You going to get a patent on the procedure? lol Maybe you should have Jesse sign a non-disclosure agreement to make sure he keeps quiet. hahaha

Jesse some had limited success going through the top by removing the buttons for the on board computer but you may have to do some cutting to the aluminum radio frame etc.

Let us know how it goes :)

i dont know who has attempted it that way max but i dont cut, break, or remove anything other than the console and dash bolts, everyone says the column has to drop, the stereo has to come out, and all the other crap on the dash, i have never cut anything to do it. just common sense only unbolt what you have to. people have written steps on how to do it, but there is way way more work then needed. i have done about 12 of them and everytime it gets faster and faster.

Sounds good dude, I'll definitally let you know! :)

Ding Ding....thats why I mentioned it wasn't cycling constantly (high enough pressure when its not being compressed, then when the compressor kicks on, the pressure gets too low and it shuts off again).

LMAO...you and your stupid GIF's. I'll have to do one of those electronic signature thingies, haha.

I've never looked at the blend door in a Gen 2...I'm sure I could figure out the best way once I see it. I'll let you know....lets just hope its NOT the blend door, lol. :D

What it boils down to is that if you can move the gray lever AT ALL (other than a tiny amount of play), then the actuator is broken. It should not budge if the actuator is good, assuming the controller isn't moving it at the time.

Ya....the rod that was attached to the gray arm was broken off, and I can only move the arm just a smidge...maybe 1/4 of an inch. Seems like its broken.

When you switch it to heat, the rod moves down(and would be pushing the blend door if it wasn't broken off) but when you switch it to A/C the rod will not move back up. I manually pushed the rod up and it stays on A/C.

I'm kinda confused on which part is the blend door now.......is it the one with the gray arm, or the one thats up behind the dash?

They're BOTH part of it. There are really TWO blend doors, one on top of, and one under, the heater core. They're supposed to move in unison with each other, hence the connecting link. I posted a big write-up a few years ago, but all of the images are now gone because of the forum conversion.

I'll see if I can locate those pics and include that post in the FAQ.

Ok, that makes sense. Well the top one moves to heat, but it won't move up to A/C...is that because the bottom one is not working?
