 Hi im new here, looking for advice. I have 94 mark8 with no forward gear, only reverse. I got stuck in some snow tires stop spinning in forward , but still have reverse . i was just talking to a guy and he said its known for these cars to do this .just change the filter and fluid it should fix it .the car was not abused runs great .two hundred thousand km well maintained,,, is this a common thing to happen,or is it rebuild time.everyone i called qoted me 1500to1700 dollars to fix:eek:

its gonna take alot more then fluid and a filter to bring back all your forward gears. if you got stuck in snow, you may have knocked the mlps switch on the transmission out of alignment, or, if you got stuck then beat the hell out of the car trying to get it unstuck, most likely you sent the transmission to hell. tow it to a reputable transmission expert and get their opinion, as far as the filter and fluid change opinion, pretend you never heard it, because that wont fix it now.

by the way, welcome to the board!!!

most likely you sent the transmission to hell!!!

if it were an electrical issue, such as the wiring harness got disconnected/broke/screwed up, then you'd still have 2nd gear....

If you were "rocking the car" going from reverse to drive while trying to get "unstuck", then you might very well have sent the tranny into the "afterlife".

Sux, and I'm sorry to say..but Jamie is probably right.

And the estimates you've received are probably "pretty close".

When my 95 tranny crapped, I saved ALOT of money and got a low mile 1998 LSC transmission, which comes with alot of the required upgrades.
I got the trans and installed it for less than 500.00
{100.00 of that was FLUID)

I wouldn't spend ANY money rebuilding/repairing a 1993-1997 4r70w as they are known to "crap again" in very short time due to many issues with those year transmissions.

Look around for a 98 Mark 8 trans, you wont be sorry in the end.
you'll come out cheaper and you'll have a better transmission than you would if you rebuilt the one you have.

Is the 98 a straight bolt in. Or are there a couple changes to the plug ins or anything? Gonna need a new tranny for my 96 LSC soon and wanna make sure I do it right the first time.

It is a Direct BOLT IN swap...meaning all the hardware/bolts/bolt patterns are the same.

With that said...

there are some very simple changes that need to be made to the transmission wiring harness plug...this is documented in various places on the web.

Another small note is the TCC soleniod should match your PCM.

For instance you'd want a 96 TCC solenoid to go with your 96 PCM.
{you should be able to re-use your original TCC solenoid} which is what I did when I did the 95 to 98 swap.

All of this is documented and will be found with a little searching.

I believe there is a writeup someplace on this site, if you cant find it here, check on the thunderbird board www.tccoa.com "then click on tech articles"

I got my tranny from LQK in Houston, seemed to have a decent warranty so I "went for it".

When I went thru that process I never could get a straight answer from anyone about what that part number indicated.

Didn't know if it described the internal upgrades or what...

So I made a "judgement call" and decided whatever it "WAS" I would be better off "with it" than "without it".
(shruggs)

So far I haven't seen what it refers to, and my car runs just fine "with it" whatever it is..

Sorry I couldn't help more...
