no torque converter lockup

Thought I'd start a new thread concerning this lingering problem. Here is the old thread :

Took the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis and it's a bad TCC solenoid. Of course they want big dollars to fix it and I declined.

Well I replaced the TCC solenoid and made sure it was the right impeadence before I installed it (~3 ohms) but the converter still does not lock. The old TCC solenoid is indeed bad as it was open. I need some ideas of what to look for next. One thing I need to do is check for the code 652(modulated lock up solenoid circuit failure) and see if it's still there.

RE: no torque converter lockup

Here's a nice code, 628 (excessive conveter clutch slippage). Well I guess this means the TC is toast. So what should I replace it with? This car is a daily highway driver and I think the OEM part should be fine. Also how hard is it to replace?

RE: no torque converter lockup

If your mach 1 is an A/T take the tranny out of it, swap it into your Mark VIII, change some wiring around, MLPS, etc, and then your mark VIII will be very happy(like my 94 is after doing such).

seriously, when my 94 TC took a dump, I replaced it(along with the whole tranny, but thats not the issue here) with a mach 1 TC, new TCC solenoid for a 94, and it is fantastic!

read this:

clears up alot of TC issues in early mark VIII's.

it is a pretty easy swap, but the tranny MUST come out. many just back it up under the car, but believe me...when all is seaid and done, take the tranny out, and do some work on a bench. much easier. if you haven't already, replace the shift accumulators at the same time.

its a bout a 5 hour job for the DOY type...if you can get a buddy to help you, it will be alot easier.

just be sure you really now how to re-install a TC. if you dont get it in properly, you will execute your tranny.

RE: no torque converter lockup

No way is the MACH an automatic. But I will consider a MACH 1 torque converter. What kind of price are they running because cost will most certainly be a factor. Also thanks for the link that was a good read for an automatic newbie.

RE: no torque converter lockup

Well, well, well, guess what is working now. My torque converter is locking up! Very strange indeed. I'm quite sure it's doing it now as the rpms drop ~200 when it locks and was most certainly not before. What on earth could have caused this? After the TCC solenoid replacement and Jmod the only thing different was the Mercon V fluid which it did not have before. But it decides to start locking now? Any ideas?
