Not the usual hub swap question

crash

On the rear spindle, I am trying to take off the dust shield so that I can press out the hub and bearing easier with the hydraulic press at work. The 3 bolts that hold the dust shield onto the spindle will not budge. This was after a day of soaking in PB blaster and then, of course, you have to try fire. Still barely budged. Has anybody else had an issue with these?

Second question, can you buy new/replacement brake dust shields anywhere. I checked Rockauto - nothing.

I remove them with a box end wrench and a dead blow hammer. There's a lot of thread sealant on those bolts. Heating them with a torch will help, if they're really stuck.

They are not available from Ford.

FWIW, I've removed the shields F&R from all of my cars, but mine are really just toys, and not daily drivers.

I freakin hate those bolts. Mine were not seized, but they super-sucked taking them out.
I would try the hammer and box-end wrench idea...

I've tried the wrench and hammer method. Maybe I'll try that again with a cheater bar over the wrench for more leverage. I can always try fire again. Let me see... MAPP gas burns at 2000C and aluminum melts at about 2000C.

I may just remove the dust shield all together. Do they really help that much to begin with?

It was a long fight, but I got those SOB's off. The threads were all blue from the thread sealer on those bolts. I managed to bend the dust shields pretty good, so they won't be going back on. I figure the dust shield just directs all the brake dust towards my nice new chrome wheels and I don't want that.

Some how that thread lock has engineered in properties, Ifound that if you tighten the bolt just slightly it will break the bond and come out fairly easily.
