Not very smooth drive on local roads (highway OK).

Hi,

It is me again. I just got a used 01 Conti with only 54K miles. The engine works great (though a little too loud comparing to my two other cars), body is in fair shape (being parked outside). The car was mostly driven in the city with occasional highway trips on weekends. Everything works great. Just few days ago I have replaced all four tires and did alignment. Few months back all brakes (rotors and pads) were replaced by the previous owner as well as tire rods. As per my mechanic, there is nothing wrong with the suspension. There is still extended warranty on the car so it was always serviced thru Lincoln dealer.

So here is my question/observation: The highway ride is smooth (no complaints here) but the city driving is poor. I have never had Lincoln before and all I have to compare it to is my old 96 Buick Regal or 05 Mazda 3. Mazda is small and very tight car with stiff suspension so I can't compare them. But Buick is soft (Dynaride - whatever it means) and in the city it drives way better than Lincoln. When I drive Lincoln over a pothole it makes sounds like the suspension parts are hitting each other instead of absorbing. Buick will make no sounds over the same pothole. My suspension mode is set to normal. Does it sound like a normal behaviour for Lincoln?

Sorry I can't explain it better but I am not a mechanic.

Thanks

You shouldn't be hearing any noises like something is banging together. Sounds like you might have some dried out ball joints or maybe tie-rods that aren't loose yet. Meaning they don't typically show up as bad during a front end inspection because sometimes there isn't much if any play in them.

If you really think it is making more noise then it should (it is a Lincoln so it shouldn't make much noise if everything is ok) then take it back to the dealer with that warranty you have and show them the noise.

My 1999 had a rattle under the drivers seat only when hitting bunps in the road. Turned out to be the exhaust hitting the body. Just a little tweak on the hanger and fixed.

Thanks guys. I will ask the dealer to check it once I have the car serviced (waiting for part that needed to be ordered).
