OD button and tranny failure

Well, long story short, I had my tranny re-built about 30 days ago. They told me it was the "3rd gear clutch".

They also told me the OD button wire was broke and needed to be replaced. I told them I would do that work, and they said "OK".

Now, a month later, my tranny is broke again, no 3rd or 4th gear. They are not wanting to do the warranty repair becasue they say, I didn't fix the button. Not having the button working causes the tranny to act differnetly and therefore it burned out in a month.

Is this for real? x(

Thanks for any input.

RE: OD button and tranny failure

BS!!!

The O/D button - otherwise known as the TCS(Transmission Control Switch), is a momentary normally OPEN switch that is used to send a momentary ground signal to the PCM. The PCM then illuminates the TCIL(Transmission Control Indicator Lamp)(O/D OFF lamp) in response and inhibits the transmission from shifting into 4th(overdrive). At the following press of the button, the PCM will turn off the O/D OFF lamp and allow shifting into 4th.

You can see that you had NO ill effects whatsoever from the switch being 'broken' since the default condition is O/D ON and the transmission should operate as normal!!!

RE: OD button and tranny failure

I just have no trust for anyone that works on cars these days anymore. It seems like everytime I bring my car into a place to get it worked on it comes out worse than when it went it.

Dig this little story, I changed the front suspension, lower arms, bushings, upper arms, strut arm bushings everything. I then took my car in for an alignment.

My radio antennae goes up and then makes a bunch of racket, but then won't go back down unless you give it a little bump start while the motor is trying to pull it down. So I shut the radio off and ran around back to give the antennae a little bump start and the antennae got sucked down. Then I turned the car over to the alignment people.

Well you guessed it my antennae is broke now, won't go down or up, those morons must have turned the radio on and then tried to push the antennea back down when the motor wasn't trying to assist. When I picked the car up the antennae was halfway down. Something as little as an alignment and I still get my car back more #### up then when it went it. I hate all those dicks that say they can work on cars and they completely #### everything up all the time, the senseless ignorant tards that work at these car places violates darwin's theory.

I do everything I can myself, but I do not have a computerized alignment machine or I wouldv'e done that too.

You could have fallen off a #$^* turnip truck this morning and be smarter than the person telling you your OD button is the cause of the problem! xo x(

I really don't understand the mentality of so-called service people who obviously don't know what they are talking about but make out like they are resident experts, and worse, try to turn a profit in the process. The guy obviously does not know better and is lying through his teeth or does know better and is trying to pull the wool over your eyes! If I don't know something... I don't know and admit so. What's the big deal?

My advise, take him in the 'back room' privately and confront him. Tell him to make it right or you will see him in small claims court. x( I'm assuming he has been paid, and over 30 days is more than any CC company will intervene that I know of.

RE: OD button and tranny failure

They called, just said "it's fixd, total charge is $89.00"

I expect the $89 is to install the button.

No mention of any OD button BS haha

they sure scared me though! I was ready to go try to prove to a transmission shop that I knew what I was talking about. ::wtf::

RE: OD button and tranny failure

If you had no 3rd or 4th and they 'fixed it', I'd be real curious what they 'fixed'. Shift solenoid maybe?

RE: OD button and tranny failure

They replaced the entire transmission with a rebuilt transmission.

However, a week later, the problem re-appears!!!!!

It is now back at their shop, waiting on it's 3rd tranny. They don't know what the problem is. He suspects there is some kind of leakage in the valve body (I think he said) because of a bad case (he said they replaced everyting except the case). Or he thinks it might be the computer.

In the week since they put in the new tranny, I did not install my chip, not even for one second.

SO here is the timeline so far:

May 2nd - I take them my car because on the 3-4 shift it is revving to high RPM's before jumping hard into 4th.

May 4th - they fix the car, telling me they fixed the "3rd gear clutch"

May 8th - I notice that, during an engine breaking situaion (coasting down a long hill in D at 45 mph for example, no gas and no brake) it seems to engage and disengage every few seconds - coasting nice, feel it engage and RPMS cliomb for 2 seconds, disengage and coast for 2 seconds. I called them about it, they don't have an explanation, btu say if it continues, to bring it in. I try drivnig with and without the chip, and the problem goes away after another day, so I don't take it in, and continue to run with the chip.

June 4th - the car loses 3rd gear compeltely while entering the hiway. When it should have shifted into 3rd, instead the RPMs climbed slowly (not like it was in neutraa, but not powering the car either... strange...)

June 5th - I take the car back to them, they replace the entire transmission with a new transmission, and install a new OD button (it was missing from before this timeline started)

June 6th - I get the car, it works great! I do not install the chip.

June 11th - the car loses 3rd gear, as it did on June 4th. I was driving up a steep hill accelerating at 1/2 throttle, and 3rd gear never engaged. no noise, no vibration, it was very polite ;(

June 13th - car towed back to their shop, where it sits today. ::grrr::

Any ideas on what it could be?

Could it be the computer?

PS - the chip is a custom tune by Jerry W from a session in Kansas City May 2003.

RE: OD button and tranny failure

I hate to be the one who says it, but it's apparent these guys are lost and guessing. :(

RE: OD button and tranny failure

let me guess u went to a cottman trans shop, right? when my car was having chugging problems i took it there and they "replaced" my trans...charged me 2200$ and the problem came up right as soon as i was 1mi from the shop, went back said that i had needed to replace my plug wires, so iwas out 2200...found out from MY mechanic that they didnt even touch the trans!!! he replaced my wires and plugs and such and the problem went away( for a while):( ... so im kinda in the process of sueing the sh#t out of them...but anyone that reads this NEVER USE A COTTMAN TRANSMISSION "REPAIR" SHOP EVER!!!!

RE: OD button and tranny failure

Nope, Cottman is a chain too.

I'm not going to post their name until it is resolved...
