odd manual shift

ok, my name is vester i'm new to the site but love it, you members have all the knowledge any mark viii owner could ever ask for. thats why i'm posting this. I have a 93 mark with a few upgrades, and something happened today that i can't explain. maybe you all can help. when my car is at a complete stop i can manually put my shifter in second gear and the car acts like its gonna die, the idle is real bad, and it cuts in and out like it has a cam. the car shifts fine when on the road with no problems in 1st, second, or third.
please help. thanks in advanced

Sounds like a pressure issue internally or a bad lock-up solenoid which may be trying to lock the torque converter. I know that my transmission was doing strange things like this as well before it took a dump. I noticed the same kind of symptom when I was rolling to a stop and I tried to slip it into neutral. When I got to 2nd, the car felt like I put the shifter into Park and almost came to a complete stop. I was only going about 7 MPH, but it was enough to get my attention.

Basically, my transmission was "cross-bleeding" inside the valve body, so when anytime I shifted into 2nd, the transmission was trying to stay in 1st and engage 2nd at the same time! Ended up completely rebuilding it while it was out.

thanks so much for your input, i was kinda hoping it was the notorious mlps like i've read so much about, are there any fixes for this other than a rebuild that you know of. thanks again

It may be worth the while to pull the pan and check the torque on the valve body bolts. Flush the fluid out for Mercon V (including the torque converter), install a new filter and cross your fingers.

Nope, the MLPS won't affect the mechanical's of the transmission, what it would to is cause the OD light to flash, store some codes, and it would shift like junk, but it would engage in the gears appropriately.

Check the fluid on the stick....black and burnt?

yes to jay, kinda the fluid on the stick looks good like new but there is also sediment on it (black) not a lot but noticeable. is this an indication of emenant failure of my tranny?

If it doesn't smell burnt and isn't too dark, its a good sign. I would "drop the pan" and inspect inside there, you may or may not see a tell tale sign in there. :)
