Oil Change Reminder Intervals

Can I change the intervals that the message indicator reminder for an Oil Change from 3,000 to 4,000 or 5,000. I'm not really sure that I want to do this or not, but since i've been having the oil changed with synthetic blend the intervals between should be 5,000 miles. Again i'm not sure I want to go that long especially since I drive this car so infrequently.

It’s actually calculated by use, not mileage. I think JP mentioned it all depends on driving conditions and operating temps as well as other factors.

I just change every 6K.

It is based on time and mileage only, I know on the 2nd gens you can custom set the oil life remaining percentage from 100% or less.

The EVTM states:

Oil Life Functions
The oil life functions include oil life, change oil soon and oil change required. The oil life is determined by three factors, Smart Tach pulses, miles driven, and time elapsed. When oil life goes down to the range of 5% to 1% the "change oil soon" will appear. At 0% the "oil change required" will appear. Depressing the oil change reset button will reset the oil life to 100%.

Oil Life Warning System (CHANGE OIL SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED)

One of these warning messages is displayed when the engine oil life remaining is five percent or less. When oil life left is between five percent and zero percent, the "CHANGE OIL SOON" message will be displayed. When oil life left reaches zero percent, the "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message will be displayed.

The message center will indicate the percent of oil life left during System Check. This percentage is based on the driver's driving history and the time since the last oil change. In order to ensure accurate oil life left indications, the driver should only perform the OIL CHANGE RESET procedure, as describe in the Owner Guide, after an oil change.

I stand corrected about how the oil life is determined. So that may be good for an antiquated 1st gen, I did some more digging for a 2nd gen on the DVD manual and found out the information below, it is buried in there, there is nothing in the EVTM that I could find.

Oil Life Warning
The engine oil level temperature sensor, the anti-lock brake (ABS) control module, odometer data and the powertrain control module rpm data are used by the message center indicator module to calculate oil life.

From the owners manual
OIL CHANGE RESET — This option allows you to reset the oil monitoring system to 100% (or your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage) after each oil change. The RESET control must be pressed and held for 5 seconds while the display counts down to trigger an oil change reset. After a successful reset the Message Center will display “OIL LIFE RESET TO 100%.” If you have established a Personalized Oil Reset Percentage, the display will show that percentage instead of 100%. To ensure accurate oil life indicators, perform this reset procedure only after an oil change. For more information on Personalized Oil Reset Percentage see the section below.

Personal Oil Life Percentage:
Your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage allows you to establish a smaller oil change interval than the manufacturer’s recommended interval. To establish your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage perform the following procedure:

1. Press and hold the reset control from the VEHICLE SETTINGS menu OIL CHANGE RESET screen.

2. While holding the reset control as display counts down the seconds to reset press the VEHICLE SETTINGS control. The display will change to “START OIL LIFE AT XXX%” where XXX is the currently selected Personalized Oil Reset Percentage. Release both controls.

3. Press the RESET control until the displayed percentage is the Personalized Oil Reset Percentage that you desire. Your choices are 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40% and 30%.

4. Press the VEHICLE SETTINGS control to complete the procedure. A press of any control besides RESET or VEHICLE SETTINGS will abort the procedure and will not establish a new Personalized Oil Reset Percentage. When your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage has been established, it will be used beginning with the completion of your next OIL CHANGE RESET procedure.

Thanks for all the info everyone :7 I guess I can't increase the intervols x( but mabye i'll just set the life at 70% and reset the first reminder then use the second time around as my time to replace the oil.

As a side note, how long often does it tell everyone to change their oil? I'm wondering how much variance it dials in based on driving conditions, etc.

Right now mine's at 50% remaining, 2100 miles since last reset. I drive about 80% stop and go, 20% highway. I don't thrash it at every light, but my driving habits are definitely..."spirited".

Evidently the time gets me because I'm lucky to get a thousand miles sometimes on the odometer before it's oil change time. I think 6 months is the max?

I think i reset it last time i had it changed, and it was telling me change it soon, less than 3k miles later. But i have 4.10's and i did make over 20 drag strip passes in that time.
