Oil Filter Adapter Gasket...

So looks like my gasket is toast. I'm getting the normal leak on a cold idle and then it goes away or slows once the car reaches normal temp. This doesn't look like it's going to be a fun job but it has to be fixed. So I'm going to build up some patience and probably do the job Friday or this weekend. I wanted to see if anyone had pointers to stick to while doing this and how much coolant I should be expecting to catch?

Seems like I'll be able to get to the main ground cable with the adapter off, so I'll change that too. Anything else I should look at while around there?

Thanks for the help...

Drain the radiator via the lower hose first. I thing that is lower than the oil filter adapter, so you shouldn't get TOO wet.

+1 for what Bud said, make sure you remove the crossover tube plug, this will let the coolant come out freely.

Next pointer would be to use a 1/4" ratchet with a long extention and a 10mm universal/wobble socket. You won't need any other tool and you won't have to remove the powersteering pump or anything! :D Its much easier to get the 1/4" ratchet in there vs. a 1/2" one and the bolts shouldn't be so tight as to make it hard to loosen.

Going back in was kinda tricky, but here's a good tip. Take your ratchet/socket and put on bolt in the end, then take the oil filter adapter and slide it over the bolt, preferably in on of the top holes. Then hang the oil filter adapter gasket from that bolt as well, making sure you orientate it properly. Then you have just the 1/4" ratchet in your right hand and you can steady the entire assembly into position with your left hand! Makes it a ton easier vs. trying to hold everything with your left hand and starting the bolt with your fingers in your right hand.

Make sense? :D

I really hated doing this job. There is no way you can even get your hands past the power steering pump to get to the gasket without removing the pump.

I would've definitely used better lines and fittings!

Be sure to check those clamps after a couple heat cycles and don't strip them out!

What would you recommend? I've got the parts ordered to replace the adapter gasket, and I am contemplating ordering a filter relocation kit from Summit. If you've got a parts list, or another recommendation, I'd really appreciate the info!

What would you recommend?

AeroQuip AQP Socketless hose and fittings.

Your local parts supplier or industrial hose supplier should have everything you need. Summit also sells a variety of their products as well.

Yeah i Gota check them for leaks pretty soon. LOL look at these screw they came with. the second picture is my upgraded I baught from ace.

Oh and I forgot to add that my car has always heated up a little bit, when I pulled the last bolt out (I didn't pre drain the anti freeze) along with the antifreeze was two gum rappers balled up into something meant to plug the water flow, which it did. Car runs cooler now.

The boys said you were pretty tall, but I didn't know you had Giant hands, lol. You do NOT have to remove the power steering pump if you install the adapter/gasket the way I explained.....you will learn all the tricks with time my friend. :)

I would have suggested that you also change the oil pressure sensor as they usually start to seep as they get older, it's not too difficult to do at any time though.
