Ok Frustrated With CD Install Options

Calling all experts.
I've been thinking about getting rid of my factory cassette and cd changer combo and put in a new head unit. Reason is I just get tired of having to swap cds in the trunk. With a cd player in the car I can choose a cd and cruise on down the road.
However, I don't like my install options. I have the choice of a kit with the little blank space or a kit with no space and just a black void.
So I thought equalizer. Won't work since it would not run off the car amp currently in the car.
So what other options do I have? I don't want to spend an arm and leg here. I still have braces to pay for you know. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Did you ever check out this one?: [link:www.evisteon.com/prod_serv/mobile_electronics/products/mach_mp3/index.shtml|Visteon AM/FM/CD-MP3 Player]

Visteon makes our OEM radios, and this one is a direct fit. I believe it comes with built in amps, but you can download the user manual to see. Most units also have pre-outs, but I'm sure you could also get a level adapter if needed.

Hey, that satellite radio unit looks cool! This is just the kind of thing I'm looking for as far as an OEM unit.

So what's the deal with buying them? Do you have to have a Ford dealer install them or can I buy the unit and install it myself?

Any idea what the prices are?

RE: Ok Frustrated With CD Install Options

Those are their aftermarket versions, and yes, they can be purchased by the public. Click on their online ordering or distributors links to find out who where you can get them. I don't know about prices...

I personally wouldn't go with the Sirius Sat. System. Look at the XM Radio Sat System. Better station selection, fewer ads (come February) and cheaper to subscribe when going with more than 1 setup, ie. home/car1/car2/car3. Only problem is getting a factory style radio. Check Crutchfield.

I'll second that. I have had many problems with Sirius. Last year they charged me $80+ in one month b/c someone in Texas had the same name, and they screwed up the accounts. After that I got my money back, and canceled my sevice because I broke the headunit. I canceled it in June '03 and to this day I am still getting random charges on my account from them, which they deny, and I have to contact my bank to do chargebacks, which I get every time!!

That is was I had in my 96LSC. Looked ok butd not professional. I was looking to get an Alpine unit but somehow make it look classy/professional without that little empty box thing.

RE: Ok Frustrated With CD Install Options

The biggest problem with those adapters is the bare plastic. How about getting some dark gray or black vinyl and covering it with that? That would dress it up immensely and with little cost. Then go get a spare "Lincoln" or "Mark VIII" trunk emblem off a first gen and glue it in the empty space. Just a thought.

By the way, I've had no experience with XM or Sirius, but I do know that Sirius has NO commercials at all, at least on the music channels. They've got streaming audio on their web site, and I was quite impressed with their selection.

It's just my own preference, but if I can get a factory look, that would far outweigh any differences between the two satellite systems. Gotta do some more research. I'll stop hijacking the thread now. ;-)

No, good info Mark. This is what these threads are for -- to exchange ideas.
With that said, I wish people would quit "hijacking the threads." LOL.:)
