The overdrive button on my 93 does not work and i did not find any fuses. The shifter handle rotates left to right a little and i think the wire has been damaged. What is the easiest way to get the the wire and to repair it? Should i just cut solder and heatshrink? How would i fix the shifter handle? Do they break often?

Thanks

yes they break often.
if your knob is moving left to right then you are probably missing the C-Clip that slides into the slot on the front of the handle.

you can resplice the wire, or replace them.. easiest is to just "reconnect" them.

what is the easiest way to get to the od wire? Have any pictures of the c clip that you speak of? thanks

the c clip faces the climate control, take your finger and rub it along the front side of the shifter handle about an inch and a half from the top of the handle you will feel a slit in the leather, a small flat head screw driver used to pry it out works well, it looks like a thick staple, you wont see it though its deep inside the surface of the leather but once you hook onto it with the screw driver you will see it as it comes out.

Jamie hit the staple right on the head.

Thanks Jamie, it woud have taken me about 500 words to describe what you said.
(lol)

Without starting the car, put the shifter in drive and turn the key off.

Take the c-clip out of the shifter handle. Pull the OD button out of the handle. Slide the handle off the shaft removing the OD switch as you go. Remember the orientation of the switch.

Depending on where the wire is broken you may need to do the following...

Remove the trim from around the climate control (this depends on your cars model).

Remove the trim around the shifter. You may also have to remove the console.

Be careful as the wire is very, very thin. It's easy to break the wire trying to strip it. I used electrical tape and went well past the splice on both sides.

You can slide the switch then the button in the handle and check if the OD OFF light comes on when you hit the button. If it works, put it all back together.

Most likely if the light works then it will engage when driving but I would check just in case.

You can get a new switch with the wire from the dealer that will just plug in for about $12 if I remember correctly. That way you don't have to worry about the wire being too short afterwards.

Good Luck.
