Overheat Advice

It appears as though my car "overheats" after some spirited driving.

Actually, it will make it to the "uncomfortable zone" on the gauge during any kind of driving, it just seems that romping on it speeds the process somewhat. So far I've;

Flushed the system.
Added Tranny Cooler.
Replaced factory thermostat with a 180 degree unit.
Cleaned all the crap out of the radiator fins.
Cleaned the crap out of the condensor fins.
Mix is 50 /50 Prestone /Water.

System was filled properly, via the crossover tube, after several "burb" events. Resevoir is full. No observed loss of coolant. No leaks. No water in the oil. Yet.....

Any Ideas? It doesn't appear to be an instumentation error, as I can regulate how fast it'll reach the "uncomfortable zone" on the gauge, with the loud pedal. I've even heard some pinging during while the gauge was "up". I use Amoco 93 ONLY.

RE: Overheat Advice

Does it cool back off after a few minutes or does it stay hot from then on out?

RE: Overheat Advice

Stay's hot from then on out.

I forgot to add in my above post...

The fan comes on "normally", or atleast, it appears to. When the AC is actviated, it runs continuous. This will aid in the cooling off, somewhat, but only for a short period, then it usually climbs back up.

Restricted flow in the radiator?
Water pump on it's way out?
Faulty Thermostat?

Hi Gus :)

RE: Overheat Advice

I am trying to remember if the fan has a dual setting like my cobra did. It should come on low with the a/c and high when the temp comes up. I had the same problem with my cobra and it turned out to be the constant control relay module. It is a black box about 4x4 usually mounted close to the radiator. Mine would work on low but not on high. Glad to see you over here.:)

RE: Overheat Advice

I was having a problem with mine it never boiled over, but it ran near the n during high speed highway driving and would cool down when I was in town doing stop and go, low speed--low RPM driving.

I changed out the water pump, t-stat, all hoses, radiator cap, flushed the system and put in a new radiator, problem fixed.
I can't say for sure what the culprit was but, I supect the main thing was the raditor.

You can buy a new OEM radiator from radiator.com for about $150 delivered to your door in about 2 days.

There are other options like one from summit. Griffin all alum. ford one but you have to have someone weld some brackets onto it to make it work I think they are around $200 + cost of having brackets installed.

If you have changed out the t-stat, are sure it is full of coolant, and put on a new cap then I would guess it is the radiator.
Not likely to be a water pump if it cools down some of the time.

RE: Overheat Advice

Might be worth checking out the fan motor and relay...

COOLING SYSTEM

Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION

The Cooling Fan System consists of a variable speed Cooling Fan Motor and a Variable Control Relay Module (VCRM) . The VCRM interfaces with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to provide control of the cooling fan.

OPERATION

The PCM monitors coolant temperature. vehicle speed, A/C head pressure, and A/C status to determine the speed at which the fan will operate. Once the fan speed is determined, the PCM signals the VCRM's fan output driver applying battery voltage from the Cool Fan Fuse to the windings of the Cooling Fan Motor.
