overheating and running cold

My 95 mark viii will run cool and never warm up on some days and other days it will overheat and stay hot for about a minute or two and then the temperature will suddenly drop back. If this is the thermostat is there an easy way to replace it?

It may be a thermostat, or, it may be that your system has a air lock in it. Is your resevoir full? If it is, then with a cold engine remove the refill cap on the coolant tube that goes from left/right infront of the intake. It comes off with a 1/4 drive ratchet. then start the car. Let it warm up and service it from there.
