PATS key

I only have 1 key for my 98 Mark. How do I program the key that I bought from a locksmith? He says it is for the 98 but, the steps he gave me to program it include having 2 known already programmed keys. Is this gonna be a trip to the dealer where I gotta spend 150.00?

Use your working key: Place in ignition, go from off to "ON". Turn to "OFF". Within 15 seconds place the new key in ignition and turn it from "OFF" to "ON" or "START". You do NOT have to start the vehicle. If the key has been coded, the theft indicator will illumate for two (2) seconds. That key can then be used to start the car.

I found this procedure in the owner's manual. You should be able to download an owners manual in PDF format at ford.com.

I have the same problem. Only one key for my '97 LSC.

I read something about some '97's having PATS II. Judging by the build date, I'm thinking our car is an early '97. I would like to get a spare key or two. What should I expect to pay for a new key. I've heard stories about these types of keys costing a lot (Esp. GM with the PASS key)

Judging by Bud's description of programing, I can handle that.

ditto, the one key, 98 and looking for a cheap fix. joe, were you able program your new key or did it take two keys? thanks...tom

yea but how much is the key to begin with, I was told $80 from a locksmith

They used to be able to be found on ebay for less. I haven't looked for any in quite some time. I have a spare blank around somewhere, but I plan on keeping it, just in case. I have 2 now...(not counting the blank - not cut) one for me, one for wife.

The steps that Bud described did not work on my car. Maybe the locksmith gave me the wrong key type. It is an aftermarket key and looks like the key that starts my department's 2007 Explorer Sport track. It's kinda square and big. The key only cost about 50.00.

for the key. this appears to be the instance where the dealer not only has product to sell but great value. don't be afraid to call yours.

the dealer purchasing experience sure beats my last encounter with a locksmith. he was doned in a black leather duster with a fedora atop and must have thought he was the indiana jones of locksmiths. after an hour he left with his duster ruffled having tried to pick the lock, break in with numerous slim jims and even evoked his god to build a dam to solve his problem.

a satelite ultimately opened my trusty mercedes.

I took my 98 Mark VIII to a dealership to get another key. I only have one. A friend of mine works there and was having this done for me, free. Well that was yesterday around 1:30pm. By 3 pm they were in trouble. The decoded my only key and could not recode my old one or the new one. They called Ford direct and tried to find out things. Told me their "tools" were new and needed old "tools" to fix it. My car is still there and I am driving a 06 Taurus. Didn't relize how much I miss my car after driving this loaner.

The dealership Northland Ford in Cranberry, Pa. called today. The had the wrong blank. Their mechanic was trying to use a Ford blank instead of a Lincoln Blank. They said once they got the Lincoln Blank with a S on it it was done in 10 minutes. It was free for me, but others would have to Pay $65.86 including tax. Labor charge was $40 and the key was $22.13......

$22 is a sweet number. less than half the price of the ebay keys or the local locksmith and they have the right logo on them to boot. i don't mind paying a premium to my california dealer tho it sure beats living in the hinterlands.

The S on the key stands for "STRAT TEC". They were/are the company that made the original PATS keys for Lincoln (FMC).

i know the story. who are they to use their logo or trade mark on my mark key anyway. more to the point why should i pay a premimum for the privilage of buying this pretender from ebay or the local locksmith when i can buy an oem key from my local dealer.

if you want to know why their logo is on the key i have that answer as well. fmc will not license their logo's to b&s.

i am surprised that the eggheads here have so little grasp of this little issue as it appears the answer is simple for our late 2nd generation marks. if you have two keys and want another: buy a key from your local dealer and program it yourself. if you have one key and want another, buy from the dealer and have them program it.

i don't think it gets simpler than that as the best price on the key comes from the fmc pipeline and/or the authorized dealers are the only place you can get a duplicate key programmed if you have but one key to start with.
