Performance goals

I started drag racing in the spring of 2004 with my '93 which basically had a chip, cat-back exhaust and 4.10 gears with traction lock. My first trip to the track, I netted a quarter mile ET of 14.544 @ 96.25 mph. I had a total of 96 runs through all of 2004 and never bested my ET for the year.

At the end of the year I set a goal for my Mark VIII to achieve in 2005. I wanted to see a 13 second run and join the '100 MPH Club'. The goal was 13.999 @ 100 mph. I never got near the track time of the previous year, but 9 trips to the track proved enough to meet my goals. I found my first 13 second timeslip in the heat of August. But it took much cooler weather before I would would run the quarter mile with the trap speed at 100 plus mph. The best numbers for 2005 were 13.866 @ 100.36.

With the season ended, the question now becomes what goals to set for 2006. After much personal wrangling and an ever shorter to-do list on the car, I have resolved to set an ET goal of 13.599 seconds with the trap speed goal of 103 mph.

13.599 @ 103? ::wtf:: In a naturally aspirated 4000 pound Mark VIII? Am I crazy? It sure seems a long ways off.

So, what performance goals are you looking for? }(

RE: Performance goals

I'm hoping to hit mid 13's (13.5-13.6) at 103-104mph with the 98 Cobra Intake Manifold, ported BBK throttle body, JLT cold air intake, B&M tranny/engine cooler, and a full set of pulleys (right now I only have the crank). Right now all the parts are waiting to be installed in the garage. I can't put on the Cobra intake until I get the Cobra R hood in and get the car smogged. Oh yeah, i'm hoping to reach my ET/MPH goals on my street tires.}(

Evidently I'm not so crazy... or if I am, I'll have company. :+

RE: Performance goals

Hey Driller, just wondering how many miles does your Mark VIII have now? Mine has 166k now and it feels like it can do another 100,000 miles easy.}(

RE: Performance goals

I think its like 116K now. I only put 3000 to 6000 miles on per year since it went from daily driver to garage-queen/track-demon. ;)

RE: Performance goals

My next goal is 100 MPH. I don't know what I'm going to do to get there, and since I didn't go to the track at all this year, looks like I'll have to make my plans next year.

I'll be getting a Blue Oval Chip, and have the 3.73 gears to install -- then we'll see where I'm at and what else I need to do.

Of course, another one of my goals is still ghost flames, but barring winning the lottery, that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

RE: Performance goals

My goal is to watch you guys spend money trying to get a 4000 lb car down the strip at 100+ mph!

sure they are fun, and fast, but unless you lose the wide ratio trans, or add a power adder, 103-105 mph is going to be your limit.

RE: Performance goals

My goal is to get into the 14.50's stock since so far as I can tell no one has done so. Current time sits at 14.651 at 97.21, better conditions this Saturday should get me there if the track is prepped. After that, I want to get to around 14 flat in the spring with just a few bolt on's, maybe try to crack the 13's with the stock gears in the rear and no T-Lok.

. That sounds like no easy feat!

I like your thinking though. Claim your fame by best stock ET. Too late for me(who the heck would I be kidding - I was running 14.6s with gears, traction lock, exhaust and chip).

I guess my goal would be best be defined as best naturally aspirated ET. ;)

Craig, I thought you were planning gears/trac-loc for your 94 as well? In any case, I would be more than satisified with 103mph times NA in a 4000lb boat.

I just want to see if it is even possible, it would certainly be out of the ordinary.

RE: Performance goals

My goals? Put old blue on a serious diet and get slicks and a power adder. Then get back up to Atlanta for another try @ the 1/4 mile.

1995 DK Blue Lincoln Mark VIII
1998 DK Blue Chevrolet 1500 P/U
2004 BLACK/Silver HONDA CBR 600RR

RE: Performance goals

Eli's car ran a 13.6 @ 102.6 or something N/a. Red whore went 13.78 or so I think at a LOT of 101-102's. She had a 103 or more if I would have gone to the track that winter.

Red whore ran a 14.5 stock if i remember right.

RE: Performance goals

Ponkfreak definitely had the fastest stock Mark VIII at 14.5. I know because when my car was stock I was in a small group that had gotten stock mark viii's down to 14.6. (hense my user name).

That stock 1/4 mile ticket is still hanging in my office.
14.637 @ 97.05 MPH - March 26, 1999.

With just a cat-back exhaust I was able to get my pig down to 14.3@97MPH.

RE: Performance goals

Eli had a convertor, 4.10's headers, chip, shift kit, blah, blah and was cutting a 2.0 short time on that 14.6 run. My car had 3.73's shift kit, headers, modded gen 1 intake and NO convertor and NEVER got lower than a 2.1 short time unless I sprayed it. The car would not get off the line at all. I have the slips at home. Eli and I both ran our best times against each other on the same run at Edgewater one night. My car would get a higher 1/8 mph every time and most of the time a higher 1/4 mile MPH than Eli's car.

The 14.5 I ran stock was EARLY in the year and it was pretty cold. I let the car sit for a hour or more and she was cold as ice when I ran it. I am sure the 60 ft was no lower than 2.15 on that run.

My secrets from the track are to keep the fuel pressure up a little high, and to change your plugs REGULARLY. I think Eli finally learned this when he changed them and started to trap 102 along with me.

Also if you run nitrous your plugs will only last for 3 weeks or less if you are heavy on the bottle. 6 weeks if you buy the irridium 12$ a piece plugs. You hvae to change them out and keep them fresh or you will loose 2-3mph if you do not.

RE: Performance goals

If I get a nice cool day I will hit 14.5 pretty easily. My car had started to warm back up (to the "N") when I got to run and I had just launched a bit more aggressivly than the first run, but I only got in 2 runs. My 60 foot time was only a 2.25 on that 14.651 run. Last day of the season is Saturday but snow is forcast for Friday, so I doubt it will happen. More than likely I will have to wait until the track reopens in February. I weighed about 310 when I ran, I weigh 301 now, should weigh about 250 in February and I will have better tires on the car by then.

RE: Performance goals

So the fastest NA Mark VIII has only gone 13.6 at 102mph? What did Geno's NA Mark VIII run, I know it was at least mid 13's. If 13.6 is the number to beat I think my car will be able to beat or match that on street tires once I put on the Cobra intake, BBK 62mm throttle body and JLT cai. My best pass is a 13.8 at 101.3 with only a 2.1 60 foot time. Still have the stock headers, stock exhaust piping and stock tranny. No dynotune either just SCT chip. I just put on a full pulley set on last weekend and will go to TNT this Sat. So do you think my car might be able to pull off a 13.5 with the Cobra intake?

RE: Performance goals

Geno ran better but he had no seats in the car and no serpentine belt. they pushed the car to the line, started it, and made one run.

I can drive to the track with my sub in the trunk and half a tank of gas, pull right into the staging lanes and still run a 14 flat.
