Phaeton by Volkswagon ?? !!

RE: Phaeton by Volkswagon ?? !!

I think Sandy is 100% correct here. There is a considerable market of people who want luxury but do not want to nor need to show off. In fashion for example you have the show offs who buy Gucci or Louis Vuiton and then you have those that buy super luxury and quality but don't show off names such as Hermes, Chanel, or Lanvin. The same applies to cars. MLB, NBA, NHL players, pop artists, etc. buy RR, Lamborghini, etc. while the truly wealthy drive Lincolns, Caddys, and the like. I know one man who is worth well over 500 million who drives an old Dodge as a daily driver. Mr. Wald was known for driving around town in his old pickup and fitting in with the rest of the good ol' boys.

Would he care to lend me ONLY $120K to buy me a '04 CL55 AMG :7

RE: Phaeton by Volkswagon ?? !!

I know exactly WHO the VW is for. When we go down to see Matt at college, the professors there get 6 figures a year, and more on "Speaking Engagements" ~ yet "conservative" is their password. I cruise thru their parking lots. Camys. Impalas, Crown Vics, LeSabres, Dodge Intrepids, lots of VWs, Jettas & Passats and many 9.3 Saabs. They would never buy any "Luxury" brands, such as Cadillac, BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes. This then the perfect car for them. All the luxury the world has to offer, and it says VOLKSWAGON on it....what a prudent purchase.... Am I right, or what???

Communucations Professor: Did you see George Mackleberry's new car?
Biology Professor: No, what did he get?
Communications Professor: A VW
Biology Professor: Prudent Purchase, my neice has a Jetta and likes it. My neighbor bought the new Beetlw, too.

Walks off having NO clue Old Mackleberry dropped $89,000, and still likes him, not the least bit jealous of the guy :) )Only Georgiee knows!)

You know what is funny? I just got back from the auto show in Detroit. I sat in one of them VW's, and it's a nice car. And the guy sitting next to me made a comment about how he liked the car and that he'd never buy a lexus/bmw/mercedes/audi....

He kind of looked like a stereotypical professor too...

VW and AUDI, FORD and MERCURY, what's the difference?

Is that the commercial I saw advertising that it has an adjustable air suspension???

VW Puts $94,600 Price on Top-Line Phaeton

Jan 15, 8:52 am ET

DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen, the company long synonymous with the inexpensive Beetle, on Wednesday put a $94,600 price tag on ultra-luxury versions of its Phaeton sedan in the United States -- making it the highest-priced VW ever.

Europe's largest carmaker began selling a 335-horsepower V8 version of the Phaeton last November at a price of $64,600.

The 420-horsepower, 12-cylinder model, which VW touts as "the ultimate flagship of the Volkswagen brand," has only recently become available to U.S. car buyers.

At a base price of nearly $95,000, the Phaeton W12 is the most expensive VW ever, Volkswagen's U.S. subsidiary acknowledged in a press release.

Even so, it added, the model was also "the most affordable 12-cylinder vehicle on sale in the U.S. market." Its closest competitors include the BMW 760Li, which starts at about $116,000, and the Mercedes S600, priced from $122,000.

The 2004 New Beetle from VW -- while not exactly the "people's car" the company took its name from -- has a 115-horsepower engine and a base price with a five-speed manual transmission of $16,330 in the U.S. market.

It's not quite a v-12, as the cylinders aren't arranged in two banks. They are staggered so that the engine can be made shorter and shoehorned into a volkswagen.

It's a nice car, i wouldn't mind having one if i had the money to throw around. I still think the continental GT would be my first choice though.

I should have my pics from NAIAS 04 up soon. I've been lazy and busy, so i haven't gotten to it yet. I don't know if i took any pics of the phaeton or not though.

That's probably why it's called a W-12.

I agree with Sandy on this one. No one wants a $90k VW sedan. The average person won't know what this car is at all. They should have made this car an Audi or even a Bentley. They could have charged $50k more just by using the Bentley name on it.

A company can get away with this by doing the same thing with a sexy sports car, like Ford and their GT, but not a sedan...........in my opinion
