I removed the console in order to replace ash tray cup holder assembly and have reinstalled everything except the transmission gear shift knob. That is giving fits. The chrome button has launched so many times because I get the od switch in handle and the knob on the shaft but the chrome button is not engaged and out it comes. Or I get it installed and the chrome button doesn't return to original position.
And pictures or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have photos, but I remember this being something of an "art" to install.

If memory serves, you can look at how the chrome button interfaces with the white plastic bit that slides up into the stalk of the shifter. I feel like everything kind of had to happen "all at once." (you couldn't just install the shifter then shove the button into place..)
