Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

You really need to change your poll - you're asking who's done a coil conversion, yet your poll asks who still has air suspension, which is most of us. You should have two selections, or change your poll to who has converted to coils.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

I just found the old thread for you. it is right above this "poll".

BTW, a "poll" usually suggests more than one choice!

But, yes, I have done a coil conversion. I cannot answer your poll, as I no longer have the air ride...well, I shouldnt say that. I DO have the air ride in our 97 LSC.

For those who would like to know the answer to how I feel about my conversion, look here:

And this is a review written by a die-hard air ride enthusiast who took a 2 minute drive in my car.

Nothing has changed!

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

I was curious about somethings myself. I will look at these thread deeper later. Do you get any check air ride or air ride off messages with the spring conversion. Or is it pretty much undetectible to the untrained eye?

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

You do get 2 messages. One sais "air ride switch off", and the other sais "check air suspension".

Most Mark VIII convertee's will cut the wire behind the dash(more on that later). I elected not to because at the time of conversion, I was not fully commited to the coils.

The last thing I wanted to do is destroy all the old air ride components, or cut any wires before having driven any real time on the coils.

ow that i know how great they are, it all boils down to the fact that i am too busy(lazy) to dig for wires to cut.

I simply hit RESET twice(once for each message).

But once the wire is cut, you turn the trunk switch back on...and to the untrained eye, no one would know without looking underneath.

This is precisely why you should always check any used Mark VIII before purchase. Just turn the steering wheel all the way in one direction, and your answer is obvious.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

I am in the process of converting to coils. I am using the Koni adjustables with Eibach springs. I will post pictures when I am done.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

What do you order when you go to Koni or Eibach? I was wondering if a standard Cougar or Thunderbird part would fit. That would get increase the availablity of parts in the future.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

I have a buddy that's a mechanic for the local LM dealership. I gave him a visit and gave him the run down on my Mark. He was very quick to find that my rear air bags are leaking. 1995-2005, I guess 10 years was enough. I remember when the Mark 7 didn't last 5. I was very close to buying a coil conversion kit but, I think for now, I will repair it. THen in 5 years when I have to replace the fronts again, I will probably go for coils. I like the idea of some smooth replaceable shocks with some lower springs.

I still am curious about the fronts. Do you just get thunderbird shocks and springs to convert to coils?

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

For the front, you need the t-bird front strut assembly. You take out the shock from the assembly and replace with the Koni. Search the suspension forum for Koni here and on the other mark 8 board for instructions. There is also instructions on Koni's website.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

Look at Ashman's web pages to see how he did his:
T-Bird fronts and rear, Koni inserts, and rear shocks.

Mine, I just paid (after slight refund after setting up a club discount) $395+ freight, and I got the 1.5" drop coil kit, fully assembled, and ready to install.

No junkyard trips for me...nothing but new stuff in my ride.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

I appreciate the link. Excellent pics. I am going to print it off later. I notice the "conversion kits" come with rear spring cups. Are they available by themselves?

I ordered the rear air springs for it today so I'm going to keep it air ride-if it fixes all the problems. I also went by the Lincoln Mercury dealer to talk to my mechanic friend again. THey have a 03 Marauder for sale that the head guy drives that they let the mechanics lose with. I guess it was bought back because of Arkansas lemon laws and they decided to use it as an errand car. Anyways, they put a Trinity? supercharger on it, 4.10 gears, and flowmaster. I have a 93 Cobra that is supercharged with a s-trim vortec, 3.73's, flowmasters, etc. and I would say that the twice as heavy Marauder would run off an leave it. Man it was fast. THe BF Goodrich Comp T/A's hook up real well to sling shot it down the road. It has air ride too. My wife was there and she keeps telling me to get a new car. Well, a used dealer accross the street had another one so I drove it just for comparrison. Well, I may have to get one. THe one across the street was 8 grand cheeper with half the miles so I may get it and go my own mods.

RE: Poll WHO done a coil Spring conversion?

If this was in Fla...then I am sure Dennis R had his hands on the Marauder.

I used to drive a 96 Merc. Grand Marquis. It was my own "wanna be Marauder". No power adders, but fat tires, flowmasters, true dual exhaust with hi-flow cats, and dark tint.

it was an ex-fed car, so it was ALWAYS mistaken for a Gov. vehicle.

I miss that car. One thing I always wanted to do was add a supercharger to it.

Sold it for my 94 mark VIII. I couldnt be happier. The Merc was one of the best cars I ever owned...but the Mark VIII appeals to my specific needs much more.

I say go for it...you will love the feel of a 4-door with butt-kick.

She roll once again!!!!

She roll once again!!!!

I like the Marauder, I guess its a matter of when I get it now. We have started the negotiations. I say, "its a nice car but I am not sure I need it. I'll think about it a few days". Anyways, hope they are hungary, the car has been on their lot a couple months anyways.

Anyways, The Good Newss! The Mark 8 rolls again on it own air ride. All that trouble with the relays turned out to be the plug. It wasn't making a tight connections and a little bending on the tabs got it fixed right.
