posted comments about my new k&n conical setup

First off, I am new to this forum. I have been doing extensive research for my 98 Mark since I am also new to the car. My air filter was a fram and it was pretty dirty. Instead of replacing it with another I decided to go with a k&n with the maf adapter. This meant the whole plastic box had to go. Anyway, I had done a lot of reading on here regarding whether or not this setup was the way to go. After swapping everything out last night, I took it for a drive and I did notice (or seem to at least) that it had a loss of low end torque. It just didnt feel like it had the same 'get off the line' acceleration. I do have 150lbs in the trunk because of the snow. This may be somewhat of a hinder. However, it did pull a lot harder at higher rpm's. I did not notice the exhaust being any louder like others seem to say. Overall I think it was worth while. I do not have a shield on it at the moment because I am in Michigan and its 20 degrees out. I will have pics to upload later.

I live an hour north of Grand Rapids on 131. I feel rather dumb.. After looking at a couple of pics online, I had realized that my maf was facing the wrong direction. Obviously after flipping it around it ran a lot better. Much more pickup off the line. The exhaust tone does sound louder and stronger now. I seem to be getting better mileage around 60. I went from 28-29 to 32-33 mpg. However at 75mph it seems to have dropped somewhat. I was getting around 25 at 75 but now it seems to be running around 20-22 mpg. I found that to be rather odd.

Umm how the hell would the intake change the exhaust tone? Sorry but I don't think that is correct.... You seem to have a lot of claims about this setup...

Performance
Gas Mileage
Exhaust Sound

You need to get the car on a DYNO... to see if it had any real improvements... those who actually put it on a dyno notice a 2hp improvement over STOCK and some descrease in torque... that is it...

The stock setup flows enough for the Mark.

All I am saying is that the sound appears to sound louder. I have no way of verifying this. It just what I perceive. As far as the gas mileage... My overall has gone up as long as I stay under 60. I dont understand how the mileage has dropped when driving on freeway. It appears to be 2 mpg short.

I think it has more to do with driving patterns than anything else.

The intake sound WILL be louder, and you will hear the engine more.

BTW i would make sure you didn't over oil the filter and make the MAF dirty that could cause performance problems. Besides that you should NOT see any kind of MPG decreases.

I had it

I had it

I'm assuming thsi is the larger MAF as sold by LMS? I used this for years, and in fact did have dyno pulls that showed a small increse in hp. For a while Jerry W was using my base tune for Marks with that MAF (my only claim to Mark 8 fame). Eventually I pulled it and went back to stock, however I do still use the K&N cone, which required a bit of fabrication to mount (a few minutes at Home Depot in the toilet repair section).

I eventually became convinced that the HP gain was from running lean. Although I don't have enough technical knowledge to prove that one way or the other...

Yeah who knows.. I don't understand why it would go down at 75mph. It does run a heck of a lot better though. I know this isn't saying much because the original filter was covered in all sorts of crap.

After having removed all the various intake restrictions on my Mark VIII I could quite clearly hear that the engine was breathing better and louder, and the nice growl that it produced does very much sound like an exhaust note. If our friend here is running the stock quiet exhaust I can completely understand how he would assume that the exhaust is louder.

Keep in mind that if you disconnected the battery to do the installation you reset the computer. The car will appear to run better for a while until the system re learns your driving habits.
