Power Brake Booster

I just purchased my parents 93 Mark and it now that it is a daily driver and not a grandma car some minor problems are appearing. The first major one is that it looks like the power brake booster has gone out. Anyone have tips on the replacement of this? I have not even started working on it yet so I am starting from scratch with it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Power Brake Booster

How does it act?No power assist at all,or just not enough? If the car was not driven regularly the vacuum hoses could be cracked and dry rotted. This could also show up as a poor idle because of unmetered air is getting into the engine.I would start by changing the brake fluid if it's anything but clear.Brake fluid draws moisture from the air and can cause the calipers to rust internally. This will show up as rapid brake pad wear as the brakes will not release completely.

RE: Power Brake Booster

I am 99% sure it is the booster. There is a sucking noiise when I press the brake and when I am stuck in traffic for a while on the brake it will start ideling rough. The brakes work, it is just without the power assist. My main question is if there is anything special I need to know or something that would make the removal easier. I am probably going to try and do this next weekend if I get the chance.

RE: Power Brake Booster

If you have brakes but no power brakes, then it could very well be the booster. Check first and make sure that the vacuum line going to the booster isn't cracked, though.

I've never done the job, but there are a couple of people around here who have.

RE: Power Brake Booster

Mine went bad it was a complete PITA to remove and replace.

I wish I could give you some pointers to make the job easier, but other than removing the lower cowl/windsheild wiper stuff.. I've pretty much blocked that entire ordeal out of my memory.

Hindsight, I would have gladly paid 200+ dollars labor to have someone else "deal with it".
