Power Steering Pump?

With all the work I've been doing on Daughter #1's REDHOT, I noticed that compared to her's, the steering effort on my car is at least twice as hard -- maybe more.

With the fluid full, look into getting a new (rebuilt) power steering pump?
 
I was kinda figuring that if it is a rack problem, then it would be leaking like a sieve. Can they go bad without leaking?

They can leak internally which can be a common hard steering effort complaint.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the low speed assist function?

The electronic variable orifice (EVO) power steering control valve actuator which is connected to the pump body to provide variable power assist. Basically responsible for low steering effort at low speeds and higher steering effort at high speeds. There is an EVO module which is fed information from the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) which controls a variable orifice in the pressure side of the pump. This usually fails 'open' which means less steering effort at high speeds.

Maybe hers is bad..which would make her wheel much easier to turn that his wheel.. if that makes sense.

Only other thing I could think of would be a "binding ball joint", but that would usually be associated with a squeal or squeak as well.

Yes, I guess it does. The disparity between the two does not necessarily mean the 'harder to steer' one is the one at fault.

Does anyone definitively notice the variable steering in their Mark VIII?

I don't. But I do know my '93 steers 'harder' at idle in a parking lot than my '96. I don't think it's necessarily a problem though.
 
My red 94 is always stuck on "highway mode". The assist is always minimum. I like it that way. I didn't know there was a "problem" with it until I bought my green 94. I did have a bad rack a few years ago but when I replaced it, it made no difference.

The green 94 steering assist varies with speed as it's supposed to.

Both cars steer the same on the expressway. At lower speeds and parking manuvers, the green Mark has more assist. I don't care for it. It's like driving a Crown Vic compared to my red Mark.

One of these days, I'm going to try to disable the variable assist on my green Mark too. I think that the valve that controls it, is located in the power steering pump.

It's on the bottom of the pump and it has two wires going to it..
Shouldn't be hard to defeat...

In the SCT proracer software you can just click in a little box and disable it, by telling the pcm the sensor doesnt exist.
 
So, how does one tell if the pump or the Rack? I drove it today and it feels normal to me. Maybe I'll leave it until something blows or I have to use my feet to help steer it.

Right now I've sprayed the bottom of the motor, looking for a source of an oil leak. I figure with 270K on it, the oil filter adapter seal is going out. But I haven't confirmed that yet.
 
Could the variable assist cause this: First thing in the morning, the first two (or so) are very stiff. After that all is well. No problems have been detected. Fluids have been recently flushed.
 
I have two 96 ers and both feel different, and I believe this is due to the EVO failure in one. The one that I believe has failed is harder (more resistant to steer at idle and low speed). I have just grown to acceept the differences as a difference in personalities.
