It only takes a few months for my headlights to start yellowing again after a polish.

500grit
1000grit
2000
then 2 buffing agents.

but i don't know what to use to prevent the oxidizing. any tips?

There is a spray-on clear coat specifically designed to protect vehicle graphics against impact and UV damage. You can use it for headlights also. It lasts a year between coats. A can costs around $20...good for many coats. I am currently using this.

There are also clear or colored plastic laminate films that can be cut, then placed on headlights. I was quoted $75 for material and professional installation. I will be using this in the near future.

Series of wet sanding I believe followed by coating as they are discussing. I should really do that considering I bought all new front lights a couple months ago and I don't keep the car garaged yet :(

I don't know if this will prevent yellowing, but Expel makes "clear bra" kits for second gen headlights. Actually, you could just buy the uncut stuff in a sheet for a whole lot less, as the headlights would be easy to trim.
