Proper oil pressure

Ok, what oil pressure are the DOHC mod motors supposed to run at?

I just installed a dual remote oil filter system (filters are in the left front fender), and put my oil sending unit on a tee connection coming out of the oil filter adapter. Oil flows thru the filters before getting to the sending unit.

I don't believe I hooked the oil lines up backwards, and I did let the car idle a while without any knocking or blowing out seals (which is what I assume would happen if you try to run the oil the wrong way thru the filter).

Upon startup, my Auto Meter gauge sez "100 PSI". Wow. After it idles a while, it'll drop to 60 or 80 (haven't road tested the car yet; I'm still working on various projects before body & paint), so all my info is with the car in "park". Revving the engine doesn't seem to change things dramatically, and it always settles at the high reading when we go back to idle.

I also noticed, for a period of about 2 minutes, that the oil pressure was hopping all around, as if I had a loose wire (loose screw, maybe -- in my head, but no loose wires). The needle would actually vibrate between 30 - 100 pounds. Then it settled down and seems OK now (except the high reading).

Any ideas?

RE: Proper oil pressure

I would need to research it, but I have heard numbers similar to what you posted.

RE: Proper oil pressure

Cold startup it is not uncommon to see 100+ psi of oil pressure even with 5-20wt.

Ford spec is: hot oil pressure for a DOHC is 20-45psi @ 1500RPM's. Your gauge is vibrating because you have air in the line. Bleed the air out and it will hold steady.

"Your gauge is vibrating because you have air in the line(from the sender to the gauge). Bleed the air out and it will hold steady."

Aha. Yep, that seems to be the ticket -- gauge no longer vibrates.

Thanks to all!

Once I get organized, I'll post pictures of my setup.
