rattle/thumping at right front when applying brake

RE: rattle/thumping at right front when applying brake

What exactly are the symtoms? What have you done to brakes/front end? How many miles? Could be numerous items, bushings, ball joints, caliper pins, pads, bad rotor. Jack up the wheel and really give everything a hard shake and tug. It should all be tight. Even sway bar links can give strange sounds.

RE: rattle/thumping at right front when applying brake

I bought four new tires about 750 miles ago. Braking was beautiful at that point. My mechanic drove it today and said the rotor(s) warped. I don't think he even removed the wheels but went by the roadtest. He says the tire man overtorqued the lugs. So long as he hasn't removed the wheels, is it reasonable to return to the tire dealer and check the torque in front of him/me/us? The kid that did the work was so stupid that he turned the suspension switch in the trunk back ON before he even lowered the vehicle! Geez...maybe that's what killed my rear sensor!!

Just to conclude this thread, what I was feeling in the original post was the very first symptoms of a warped rotor. I guess they gotta' go sometime.

Take the car back to the tire place. If it takes more than 105 ft. lbs. of torque to loosen the lug nuts, I would say you have a case and they owe you some rotors.

RE: rattle/thumping at right front when applying brake

It took 85 (isn't it INCH lbs.?) to back the lugs off. Can being too loose be just as bad as too tite? It's too late now, I already did the fronts and the rotors were getting pretty thin.

Technically it's pound-feet(or newton-meters) ;)

From the manual:

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Description..............N-m.............Lb-Ft
Wheel Lug Nuts......115-142......85-105

JP: how much is that in micrograms/nanometers? :p

RE: rattle/thumping at right front when applying brake

:) Like it matters to me. The only reason I mentioned it is because the brake guy laughed at me like I was an idiot and said, " you mean foot INCHES." (after I said make sure it's 90-100 ft lbs.) All of this is irrelevant anyway. I just read a post where Driller was ASKING a question instead of ANSWERING one. There goes my perception of God.

I don't know why this reminded me, but this is what kids growing up in 1950's Detroit were taught. Probably just a good story/legend although I think I may have seen something about it at Greenfield Village.

During WWII, Hitler, to show Henry Ford how good German engineering was, sent him a drill bit smaller than a human hair. Ford drilled the supplied hair and returned both.
