rear end gave up the ghost

ive got two 95's.

both around 250k....

went on about a 50 mile trip today , and at the 1/2 way point the rear end began grinding and stinking up a storm.

about 1k miles ago , i had the airbags converted to coils , and a u joint replaced. (not at all happy that the rear end blew up now.)

i ramped it home , and , havent gotten into it yet.... i know its the chuck (goes forward, just grinds in reverse, wont roll in n) (plus the cover was smokin' and it stunk of gear lube)....

my brakes feel really good , and the antilock still works.....
questions , what chuck will fit? (crown vic , marquis)
should i change the chuck at the pinion, buy new gears/bearings, or swap0 the whole diff (i dont think i wanna mess with those working antilock brakes)

im also not too crazy about 'killing' a usable parts car over a 100.00 part.
should look at a junk yard for a chuck , or look into an aftermarket performance model?

thanks in advance.....(ill be driving around in my parts car for a few weeks.....=[)

oh , right , now that i think about it , i should be able to drop the whole unit w/o cracking a brake line ....(i was thinking of drums) being that the springs were just done , it shouldnt be too bad to get them apart

I like that...chuck....haha. When doing a differential with a car with drum brakes, you still don't have to pull the brake lines. You just slide the axles out.

As far as your chuck goes, get a cougar one, a 99 cobra one, or similar used one if you're looking in that market. You can have one built with new gears and bearings for 500 or less.

Who did your u-joint??

a chuck is the differential .... a differential would be the whole housing.(must be a new england thing)
yeah , i have a diff from a 92mustang avail ... the bearing and seal kit said they were the same animal .... 8.8 ..... the person who did the u-joint / rear suspension isnt goin to be working on my car anymore.....nothing on a lincoln should go from 'looks good' to 'blown up' in 1k miles..... for that matter , nothing on any car should

now im thinking to take the entire housing (from the parts car , intact) and put in in the better car.... (i'll know the seals are good , and that the gear ratio is the same) .... , then put the junkyard differential into the 'parts car' ..... i really dont wanna disable a semi- functioning car over this... (the argument for swapping the whole unit , is that i wont have to mess with the pinion bearing preload)
