rear shock mount question???

i have a kind of simple question about the rear shock mounts, im pretty sure that it is the shock mount in the trunk that is goin bad, sense the sound is a thud that seems to be comin from the trunk... my question is, once i get the mount and start to replace it, can i just replace the mount or will i have to go the route of new shocks also?

now heres another question, my front wheels have a slight jerk in them when im in reverse, it usually happens when i first start movin usually while im goin kind of slow, when the car first starts rollin the tires jerk like they wanna go forwards instead of backwards... does that have have anything to do with the struts, allignment, or bearings, or anything else im not thinking of? they also jerk when in drive if the traction control is on, but when the traction control is off it seems to be fine. at first i thought it was an axle problem, but its only happening when the traction control is on... any ideas?
thanks...

RE: rear shock mount question???

Yes, just the shock mount can be replaced. I just bought a set for my #1 daughter’s car.

I don’t have a clue as to your second question. Are you running Mercon V in your tranny? Have you done the 1-2 upgrade?

i just got the car last friday, i dont know too much about mark 8's, i can pretty much figure out anything wrong with my towncar, but its simple compared to my mark 8... so i dont know whats in the tranny, im gonna take it this week and change all the fluids... whats the 1-2 upgrade???

another question, once i pop out the back seat to look at the upper shock mount, what else do i gotta do to get to the mounts?
i tryed that today, but im probably gonna have to have one of my friends do that, cuz theres not much room for me in the back seat to be working on anything, im 6 foot 2, so theres not much room for me to manuever back there lol...

thanks again...

Here is the link to the 1-2 accumulator/Mercon V replacement.

I go in from the trunk. You don't have to get completely in -- just get to the two shock towers. Let your hips and feet dangle outside. Roll from side to side get from one side to another. You should fit. After all, it IS a Lincoln.

Watching someone doing the rear shocks looks like some one whacked you and could not get your body fully into the trunk. Have someone take pictures!

There is an electronics sensor on top of the shock that needs to be removed.

RE: rear shock mount question???

thanks alot, i appreciate the help...

i saved that site and ill be doing that this week hopefully.
to change the tranny fluid in a mark 8 do you have to move the engine or anything difficult like that? i had one car that you couldnt change the fluid unless you moved the engine, that was reall annoying lol...

RE: rear shock mount question???

No engine moving needed. Although, if you don't take a shower in old tranny fluid, you somehow avoided a messy initialization into the Lincoln Repair Club.

Lol.. ive always been pretty good at avoiding getting too greasy while workin on cars, ill have to try this and see if i can get away without a fluid bath lol...
thanx again.

RE: rear shock mount question???

A note on replacing the shock mounts - it's usually MUCH easier removing the shocks with the mounts still attached and then removing the mount from the shock once the assembly is out of the car. If you try unbolting the shock from the mounts in the trunk, it's almost impossible to get that nut off the shock shaft in that location.

You have to unbolt the shock mounts from the trunk either way, but it's much easier just removing the bottom shock bolt and then dropping the whole assembly out and removing and installing the top mount from the shock while outside the car.

RE: rear shock mount question???

I've done shock mounts on two marks. I didn't remove the shock (or the wheel for that matter) either time, and i didn't encounter any particular difficulty.

RE: rear shock mount question???

its gonna be a couple of days before i can get it done, the lincoln dealer here has to order them... they told me that it comes in a 3 part package, one part is $20 one is like $15 and the other is $40.
he said he can sale it to me with just the 2 cheaper parts if they are what i need, but i wont know until tomarow when i go look at the pictures of what he has to order. but im hopin that its just the 2 cheaper parts that im gonna need... i didnt think the mount would come in a package i thought it would just be the mounts...
also looks like the suspension in this car is about to go out also, so ill probably have to go the replacement shock and strut route so its cheaper because my budget is small right now, ill more than likely have to sale my towncar to fix the mark 8, but im hoping in the long run it will be worth it...

so if anyone knows anybody who needs a 5.0 towncar engine or any other parts, or just a towncar for parts let me know...

RE: rear shock mount question???

I'm 6'2" myself, it was much easier for me to remove the back seat.

The bottom just pulls up from the front. Push in and up on the front, it comes loose, then angle it out the door. The back only has two bolts holding it on the bottom. It then lifts right out. There was a fabric cover to remove, then the sound deadner covers over the mounts. The mounts are only about three inches behind the seat back.

As was stated earlier, remove the mounts nuts and drop through fender attached to the shock. With the tire removed, the shock will swivel on the bottom bolt away from the car toward you. Very easy to replace mount then. Reverse order to put together.

If you have a '93 or '94, you will likely have a shock actuator to remove and replace(with stock shocks). If you have them and eventually go with new Sensa-tracs, or Bilstiens, just don't re-attache the actuators(just lay to side; they will continue to work, but do nothing to affect car(may want to secure and tape any electrical contacts to guard against any shorts)).

I presume the three kits are 1)shock mount 2)new shock bolts and nuts(top and bottom) 3) Both shock mount and shock bolts/nuts together as a kit. I received the combo kit when I installed my Sensa-tracs.

RE: rear shock mount question???

I just did these myself last week. You do not have to pull the wheel, just compress the shock and pull it out. I jacked the car up on both sides, made it a breeze. It took about an hour and a half because I'd never done it before, the 1st shock was the learning mount, the second one took about 20 minutes.

I got my mount as a kit, Ford part # is F8LZ-18197-AA , comes with the mount, mount nuts, shock nut, lower shock mount bolt and lock nut. It was about $36 per side for the kits. Depends on your Ford dealer.
