hi,

i hate the look of the back window seal, mind is not as bad as some. is there anything we can do with out replacing the window? any members have or done anything about this?

RE: rear window seal

Well if you have good insurance you could have an accident which would require you to pay the deductable to get a new window.... or you could replace it yourself and spend the 3000 dollars required to get a replacement window...there really is no short cut unless you cut the trim off which in my opinion looks real ugly...

RE: rear window seal

Some of the guys on the other board have used black truck door edge molding to give it a straighter edge. cheap, easy, effective.

RE: rear window seal

You can cut the sides but you have to be careful.
You can also tuck in the side flaps and leave it for a few months. When you pop them back out you will have no ripples on the sides. This is only for the sides not the top.

RE: rear window seal

I went with the door edge molding. Its bulkier than the factory seal, but even though it doesnt look perfect, its alot better than lasagne noodles running down the side of your car.

I bought 2 kits(each contains two 42" long strips-$5.99/kit)
I used one kit to do the sides, and the other kit to do the top, with the two edges meeting in the center, and cut the excess off.

Here is a picture. I am going to re-do the top pieces, and angle cut them so they meet up with the sides. notice in the top piece that the ripples are still visible. THATS how bad mine was. I am happy with it now.

RE: rear window seal

I am so glad I found this thread. My seal is wavy on just the drivers side, and was driving me crazy!!! ::grrr:: After reading this, I went out and tucked that side in, and now I am a happy camper. My back window looks sooooooooo much betta now! ;) Thanks for the easy fix.

RE: rear window seal

Ok, grab the side ripples with both of your thumbs and lift it up so you can peek under it, this should reveal a gap along the sides, between the trim and the body of the car. Fold the flaps of the trim in a upsidedown "U" shape and tuck it in the gap.

Hope this helps, if not let me know and I will try to post some pics.

RE: rear window seal

This might be silly, but what if you cut off the rubber altogether, filled in the gap with Bondo or some other type of filler, and then painted? Not only would there be no gap, but it would be a smooth looking fit, too.

Or does the car flex there and it would crack?

RE: rear window seal

I would not put a rigid filler(aka Bondo) in the gap. When setting windshields, a common mistake is having a corner or side touching the steel opening. This will most surely result in a cracked windshield at a later date. The expansion rate of the glass vs. steel is such that the glass will expand with enough pressure to stress the glass so as to cause a break. I would think the same holds true for the rear glass.

FWIW, I have heard of trimming the seal back as it is not actually a seal per se. I haven't seen one(or a pic), so I'm not sure what it would look like. But done properly it should look a lot better than the lasagna. Any gap could be filled with black windshield silicone. Fortunately, my '93 has only 3 ripples. All on the upper passenger corner, two on the vertical and one on the horizontal trim.

RE: rear window seal

In MA we have free glass replacement (no deductable). My rear seal is looking terrible. I hope some jerk gets mad at me and smashes my back window soon!!

RE: rear window seal

I hope you dont smash it, it angers me enough i pay out the butt for insurence nothing better then insurence fraud to make it go up.

RE: rear window seal

nope definatly don't plan on smashing it, not cool to pull insurance fraud. If it happened it's be happy though!! I'd still have to have the window retinted though!! I know what you mean about insurance rates, I pay abour 2000 a year for my mark and I have a perfect driving record, or accidents or tickets!!

RE: rear window seal

Yes 3M makes a universal edge seal. I had mine redone when i replaced the front windshield. Harmon Auto Glass has lifetime warranty against leaks and told me about it. They cut off your entire stock seal, then put this T-type insert in there that has sticky already on it. Mine looks shiny black soft rubber like factory and you cant tell. Find a local harrmon Auto Glass dealer near you and ask them about it. only the top two corners need to be cut at a 45 degree angle, and if done right with extra leangth, it blends together when relaxed and is invisible, to the observer.
haha it DID look like lasangna from the sun down here in Fla. :7

RE: rear window seal

Wow that looks really good. Did you use it all the way around or just on the sides? So what exactly did you use for that? Mine is looking terrible..........this looks like s good solution.

RE: rear window seal

Wow - that looks *REALLY* good! Can we get a shot of the whole rear of the car? I almost think that looks better than stock, to tell the truth.

I can't wait to get my hands on a busted Mark with warped rear seal, couple dead air shocks, broken handle, rough-shifting tranny - for around $750 just because the owner is sick of it. $1000 in parts later (and a good razor knife) - BAM! Back in business.
