"Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid."

The 2 GA signers of the Declaration of Independence were Lyman Hall & Button Gwinnet. Both are buried in the same small town cemetery in Midway, GA.

I've been there and visited with them, believe me, it's a unique experience.

Gee, Steve, your link sends me to Barnes and Noble. Guess I'll buy a book. Impressed. Tell you what. The signers of the Declaration of Independence are known. Come up with an autobiography on each guy, get all 56 and I will pay you $560 dollars for your efforts. Post them here so we can all read the truth.

Sandy, I am somewhat ashamed that you would discount the efforts that our founding father's made to give this Country the freedom it enjoys to this day. I know it was a joke but come on, people did die for our freedom and continue to to this very day.

As for you other two, put up or ShXt Up if you know their true life stories. I thought this was true, but I admit that I did not check the voracity of the posting I received, from a trusted source I might add. Hey, if I offended anyone with my patriotism, can you blame me, I just finished seeing Toby Keith in concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee and it was great. To each his own.

Sorry Ron. In retrospect I agree, I was a little touchy. A little bit too lit up from festivities in Brew City tonight. Unfortunately, it was Steve who got my goat.

Darn, I didn't think it would be that easy. When I clicked on that site my anti-virus software was squealing like a stuck pig. Does it do a good job of explaining how their lives ended up? Is it close to the story I posted? I have heard most were tragic but then again, I admit to not looking this stuff up before posting. My bad.

Ron, thanks for bringing me back to reality. I hate being testy.

Hi Dean, Happy 4th, or Independence Day as you correctly refer to it. I am going to read up today on the signers to see what really happened to some of these guys. All I can tell you is they had some pretty big bouncers to do what they did.

Hey Bryan. Happy Independence Day/4th! I am reading the John Adams biography currently. I just started it, so it's going to take me a while. When I hear how they got around back then...wow! It took weeks and sometimes months to get where they wanted to go. Can you imagine riding horseback in 10 degree weather for days and days? The determination these people went through to make a stand against oppression.

Modern transportation definitely rules!!!

I am really looking forward to reading what kind of person John Adams was. There will also be mention of Washington, Jefferson, Abigail(his wife), Franklin, and so on.

I can't comprehend that the mods are getting complaints for this. I took my kids to some great festivities tonight and I have to come back to read that some people are complaining to the mods.

It may be time for me to bow out of the LOD. If the membership wants sterilized conversation, well, that's not me.

I am willing to take it as long as the rest of gang is willing to get some back. It is all in fun. You guys are way to serious.

I still can't believe someone would hit the alert button, or worse, actually send an email. Whoever is doing this, send me an email and explain why you are offended and I will potentially change my behavior. Pretty soon, life is going to be devoid of all happiness. Nice and sterile. Nice and safe, No-one will ever be offended and no-one will ever read any posts because they will be too damn boring.

Who would complain? What ninnies! Sorry, but I still have to stand my ground against this assault on freedom of speech, which is provided in a joking, innocent and hopefully entertaining fashion.

I agree, Bryan. For crying out loud. Everytime someone reads something they don't like, they go crying and whining to the mods. BOO-HOO!! If you don't like it, don't read it. Why is this so hard for people to understand? If I see a topic that bores me, or if content doesn't suit me, I ignore it...why go pissing and moaning to the mods?? Take Waz Fuz for example. I have the highest respect for him. I have on occasion pissed him off, but instead of crying, he told me where to go. Big time. That's the way it should be handled. No one called the mods on Was Fuz, nor did I. Everybody who it didn't concern, ignored it. You guys are talking about your Independance Day, and the Constitution. But seems some people here don't want others opinion to be heard. Well screw you guys. I don't know who's complaining, but you know who you are. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T READ IT. I'm mean..if 25 people don't care/approve, and then 2 or 3 complain, why do you cater to the minority? Why wreck the parade for everyone beacsue a couple of sissies? Sigh.....
