Remote unlock thingy

How can I tell if the remote for my 1995 Mark VIII is working or not. I replaced the batteries but it still won't work. The keypad on the door unlocks both the doors and the trunck so it seems that unless the remote is dead it should work.

Well the wife got back last night with the car so I ran right out and followed the reset directions. The locks cycled when I shorted the plug but did not function when the lock button was pressed on the remote. It looks to me like it might be the remote but how can I tell for sure? I have seen replacement remotes on E Bay. Do these work well. Does anyone have experience with them? I just hate throwing money at a part when I am not sure its bad.

I have bought about six of them on Ebay and they have all worked out fine. I bought five for my '98 Mark (which only accepts four at a time), and one for a Mercury Sable for a friend. Just make sure they will guarantee it will work on your year car. Check the back of your origional remote (if you have one) and see if the numbers on the ebay page match. If they do, buy it. Check out the FCC ID, the TRW number and the DOC number. If they match go for it. they are only $10.00

Nope I didn't check the old batteries first, just went and bought new ones. I didn't know that those darn things where almost $4.00 each. Oh well. I checked again and the batteries are installed correctly.
Hey Mr. John, Where did you find your remotes for ten bucks?

Just an update on the remote thingy. I bought a new one off of E-bay, reprogramed the car and it works!!!! I am jazzed the stealership said it would be $400 bucks to fix. Wow it pays to do your home work.
